Hey guy's I am new to the site and just joined, I have been an avid rider my whole life, have taken the last five years off (have a family now) but I recently bought a 87 cr 125. When I bout it a week ago it was running but was mixing oil with coolant. The previous owner just had it rebuild and there are only about 3 hrs on the motor and I trust him he is a friend of mine, so I took it home and cracked the case and found that the waterpump wall behind the impellar was all deteriorated so I took it off and cleaned it up and used jb weld to patch the holes, put the whole thing back together and now I have no spark. I just want to ride and this is so frustrating can anyone please help me

This could be a simple matter of a loose wire or bad ground, or something much more involved. First, Do you have the Honda manual or a Clymers etc.? Second, you said you cracked the case, I'm asuming you just removed the right crankcase cover, correct? Water pump issues are normal with all the early water cooled Hondas because they used magnesium castings which don't get along with normal coolant. The JB Weld fix is probably the best way to go since replacements are non existant. I recommend you do a normal spark check (ground the plug and kick it over) if you haven't already. If that fails, break out the manual and test the coil, CDI and all the connections for the spec values and continuity. Also check the kill button. Hopefully, something just came loose when you were messing with the water pump. Also, you might want to kick this thread over to the vinatge forum since it's an '87. Keep us posted. dogger

Thanks dogger, I got it started today turns out it was the kill switch sticking. But it sure did not want to start. I had to turn the rotor with a power drill after I couldn't kick anymore lol.. but once running it was bogging really bad and would not idle. I tried to ride it but after 50' of bogging and bucking it died and would not start again until it was completely cooled down. When I cracked the case the first time I had some trouble putting the rod tie back on and at the time did not have a manual (still don't it's in the mail though) and when I took the top screw out the clip and spring came flying at me and I put them on as best as I could figure. but the rod felt right it went up and down and seemed to be okay. Any help anyone cna give me would be much appreciated tomorrow's my bday and just want to ride this thing - thanks all

The symptoms you have now, sound a lot like an air leak. I recommend you stop all work until you get your manual because you may end up making a bigger and more expensive mess than you started with. Once the manual arrives and you can check the work you did against it, I would perform a leak down test. My guess is it will fail and the leak will be located somewhere around the water pump or right crankcase cover. I suggest you purchase a whole motor gasket kit and new water and oil seals for the water pump for starters. That way you will have the necessarry gaskets to repair any leaks that may be found and the water and oil seal will fix that possible source (unless it's the JB weld repair). Unfortunately, I don't think you will have your bike up and running for your Bday. dogger

okay so today I opened the right case above the water pump (thanks Lee) and found that my power valve arm was all messed up, had liquid gasket compound on it, the bolt that threads in with the clip and spring was stripped out and the thing was almost siezed up. I cleaned it up got it going up and down and feeling right but still don't know exact spring and clip placement and I have a stripped screw to deal with. I think I could put a larger bolt in but then the washer piece that allows the arm to rotate will need to be drilled out. Is there a way that I can replace that female threaded piece or does that mean that I need a new head? Does anyone have a pic of what that clip and spring should look like when properly installed? And isn't this a part of the atac system that people say sucks and get rid of? I thank anyone in advance. I'll admit I am a novice at 2stroke mechanics and bought this bike to really learn on and probly screwed some things up by jumping in to this without a manual.... but its on its way

Hey just wanted to let anyone out there know tha tif you try to repair holes in your waterpump housing with jb weld (like I did) I can pretty much guarantee you that your waterpump impeller will become fused to the inside of the housing once you add the coolant and let it sit for too long. I know this because it happend to me. Does anyone know what year motors will directly bolt on to an 87 cr 125. I am done with this thing and I put alot of work and money into the bike and just want to get a good motor (hopefully and 88 or 89) so that I do not have to deal with the magnesium waterpump housing crap... please help
