Researching this

AK,
I picjed up on your question form another mod in the KB forum. I'll research it and try to post something by Monday.

As far as the premix oil and gas, that will not hurt the aluminum. We ran aluminum tanks in the 70's and the factories still use one of special aluminum tanks now. It will depend on how the applicable generation Honda 2 stroke frame spars are made and assembled.

If anyone has some gouge on this form anothe rforum please feel free to post here. If the info checks out I can put it in the KB forums.

Bill

thanks, but still confused, are you trying to eliminate the gas tank and try to keep you fuel in the frame?

I've heard of issues with some two-stroke oils containing kerosene causing surface rust on cranks, might be something to look into.

Aluminum should hold up

Faded,
As I told Alex, we ran aluminum tanks a lot in the mid 70's without any problems due to oxidation (corrosion) and the factories still use them. I am going to be talking with the superintendent I am teamed with this weekend. He is a level III metalurgist and a master machinist. He has a good knowledge of the various aluminum alloys and will know if there are compatability problems. I'll be sure to post what I find out. The problems with the cranks is in the steel alloy and the aromatics in the heavy hydrocarbons forming acids, as I understand it, but I left organic chemistry behind when I quit teaching chemistry in 1986. Texas Twister has a good understanding about the various hydrocarbon chain molecules but I have not seen him here recently. Anyway, I'll keep this in mind and post as soon as I know something.

Sounds like a good idea...an oversize tank plus one of those and you would be set.

This was on TT a while back , each spar of the 3rd gen frame was claimed to hold roughly 1 quart. There was a thread with pics that you mght be able to find again.

Thanks Taylor, thats waht I needed

Alex,
Taylor answered my question on your frame generation. and no structurally you will not harm the frame. The holes you drill for fittings should not weaken the spars. Don't try the no tank routine, you fill the spars through the tank connection tube. be sure you read the entire thread in the 4 stroke Knowledge Base. I will move this and a link to the 4 stroke root thread tomorrow.

I'm considering doing this on my 01' had have read all the threads on TT that I could find. Still no 00-01' specific information. Also, no comment on how long it takes to fill the frame - seems like it would take forever:O

There was a mag article a while back (97 IIRC) where they tested a CR250R set up for woods - it carried fuel in the frame and in a custom aluminum tank that rested between the frame tubes between the engine cases and skid plate.

I have heard of this before, but I have never known anyone who has done it. I would be interested to know how it goes if you decide to do it.

Go look in the 4-stroke section, a couple CRF fellows have done it and posted pics. Same pics are also on TT IIRC.

Ok, I think I'm going to go buy the parts to do this tonight (cross fingers), and I will have pics to go along with the project.
