Default cr80 2001 wont start/no compression

bike just died and lost compression, there wasnt much to begin with so was bound to happen, its my friends bike and he has no clue about stuff liek that, theres a very light scoring of the barrel you can see it and you can feel it, now people are telling me fresh piston kit will work but im not so sure, my dad always told me if you can feel it get it rebored/replated/sleeved. looking for other advice whats best to do, spend 50/60 doing top end or 160 getting it replated too. would this mark cause it not to start cos peopel are tlling me it would still start, the same people saying it only needs a piston n ring.

Spend a few dollars and have the cylinder inspected and measured. This will help make up your mind what should be done.

I would have the cylinder replated while it's all apart and know that it's good for a while since it was taken care of right. I'd also check for play on the crank and consider doing a complete rebuild IF there is any play in the crank.
