Default CR500 or KTM 300????

OK, here's the deal.
Selling my YZ250F to get a two-stroke enduro/good desert bike.
I was pretty dead set on the 300 but I noticed that there were very few of them online and none of them were located near me (San Diego), so I'm thinking about the CR500. I know that they're beasts and have insane power, but I think I can get used to it over time and just learn to man-handle it. Also, I only weigh about 140, so the 500 would prolly eat me me alive at first, but I think its worth taking the time to learn to ride better. Plus, there are a lot more 500's for sale around me and for cheaper and I've heard of those things completing the entire Baja 1000 with broken radiators, so they're reliable. What should I do?

No one sells their 300 unless A. there getting a newer one or B. for some reason there getting out of motorsports. They are a awsome bike, I cant speak for the 500 But comparing my 300 to my old cr 250 night and day. If you ride all wide open desert than the 500 will probaly work fine for you. But soon as you have to get into more technical stuff I think youd prefer a more moderate and useable powerband and lighter bike. . . .

.....I want to see you "Manhandle" a 500cc 2 stroke....PLEASE GET THIS ON VIDEO!!!

I'm sorry man, but I have seen pro level riders get bucked off those things like they are a wet paper towel.

By no means be afraid to get a 500, but do us all and yourself a favor...respect it, or it wil MAKE you respect it.

My vote is to get on ktmtalk.com right now...contact mack mack and see if his 300sx is still for sale...

You can get a 500 any time you feel like, but not too often does one get the shot for a 300cc frankenbike.
Hydraulic clutch, easier starting, better mpg. I want one

Board Message (Big Bikes)

Oh and Jimbo, I manhandle my 500 all the time....around the garage...that's right...I pick it up and toss it side to side when it's in my way

No one "manhandles" a CR500! you learn to finesse one, if you try to manhandle one it will eat you alive!

3 people come to mind.....Jeff Stanton, Magoo, Jo Jo Keller

Uh, at 140 lbs you will be able to stand on the kickstart and it won't move. No offense, I rode Open class bikes at that weight and was very successful but they DEMAND respect. If anything is going to be manhandled, the bike wins everytime.

Usflag Re: CR500 or KTM 300????

I grew up on open class bikes like 400 Maico and 370 Suzukis to name a few. The CR 500 is much stronger than the air cooled bikes were. I was 6'-!" and 210# , they were strong bikes for me, and I was a weight lifter, too. An open class 2T will jump on your head and beat you if you don;t respect them totally. I rode and raced with Dave and I'll never figure out how that little guy could manage the 500.

Best of luck if you get the 500, a KTM 300 set up for Desert or MX would be a better handling and performing bike for you size.

I'm 5'9" and 180 lbs. Kicking my 520cc KX over requires a full body kick. No sissy leg kicks like a 125 takes. That's OK when I'm fresh, but after a few hours and I'm stuck in a mud hole, it's a handful.

As for the power, you'd get used to it. As others have said, you sure don't manhandle one. Especially at your weight! It just take a generous amount of throttle control. Don't let anyone scare you out of one if you want it. I'm a sit behind a desk all day, never work out guy and I do just fine on mine.

500's are very powerful but you guys make it sound like they are putting out 200 hp! The bike will only go as fast as you want it to. Throttle control is key, but don't let people turn you away from a 500. I used to ride one for playing around in the desert and absolutely loved it! After riding that a 250 smoker felt like a weinie bike. Ever go 100+ mph down a desert road? If you haven't you need to! Gnarly things go through your head at those speeds!
