I like my CR500. Can't imagine going through my riding life without one. So I have had one for 19 years. For what you describe, I would get the KTM 300 though. Hard to find I am sure. The 250 EXC is very nice too, and if I am not mistaken the cylinders will swap. I wouldnt be as interested in the SX or MXC version as the transmission has closer ratios, as does the Honda CR500 over the EXC's.

yeah,
well, keep in mind that Im not racing or anything, this is pure recreational dirtbiking. Ill be cruising half the time, but in all honesty, i need a bike that will scare me when i pin it...my 250F is pretty tame and its already boring me out on the huge sand washes where 60mph top speeds suck...
i know i'll never be ever to "manhandle" that beast but all i want is to be able to have it under control most of the times, i realize that at times the throttle will kick my a** and it'll scare the crap outta me, but hey..i know that i'll be a much better rider and learn to respect throttle control. And for starting, im sure the ends will justify the means.

Many bikes come to mind then.
300 worked over for SX specs
ktm 360/380 mxc/exc (id go for CR tranny)
ktm 440/500/550
cr/kx 500
I wont mention the ATKs

If money is in abundance... service honda's 500... or AJ is working on a deal with Kawi and gonna be making kx 500's in new aluminum frames soon

I would have to agree with most of the above ,get the 300,I've also seen and rode 500's that were great trail and woods bike's however they had every trick done to them money could buy,and still with the 500 it is not a question of when it will get on you ,but how often if your not very carefull with your right hand ...also if you do get either of the bike's they are completly different than your four stroke..the ? is not about how much power and torque the 500 has it is how to keep it from spinnin' the wholly stuffin' out of the back wheel with only a little throtle.

One other tidbit from a guy who has a 250 and a 500. The 500 is a lazier ride. You don't have to worry about what gear you're in. There's always enough power on tap to do whatever you want. Just put the 500 in 2nd or 3rd and ride. The 500 will run right over small trees and medium sized animals. It's kind of like a real fast army tank.

Baron,
Not implying that they are too powerful for him, I just don't want someone that hasn't ridden a big bore bike, either 2T or 4T get spooked on the first couple of rides. I loved my time on open class bikes, I am building a 73 400 Maico vintage ride and ride a YZ 426F.

Thats funny....Small town paper reads "Man breaks out a CR500, medium sized animals and trees in DANGER!" "Lockup your medium size animals, locals report seeing a CR500!" "Town over run by CR500!" I'm going to have fun all day think of this. Thanks GW

Does KTM still make the 380 2 Stroke? I rode a buddy's a few years back and that thing was a monster! Might be a happy medium between the 300 and CR500.

Just answered my own question. I went to KTM's website and it doesn't look they they make it any longer. Any idea when they stopped making it? Maybe you could pick up a used one??
