Default cr250 starting problems?????

i got my bike about 3 weeks ago. i didnt idle, so i adjusted the idle and got the bike to idle. the first week or so i had it, it would start first kick.

but now, it seems that it takes me like 5 minutes or so to get it started. i dont constantly kick, i wait and kind of stroke the kicker? i dont know if this is correct or not, but that is what i do.

it is kind of weird, when i first get on it and kick it, it sounds normal but on the very next kick it doesnt really turn over, it just clicks sort of. but if i wait a second, then it kicks normal again. maybe you guys know what im talking about more than i do

anyway, the bike always starts it just depends on how long it will take. so how do get that first kick performance back?

wait, so when you are kicking it, and it is making a clicking sound, is the lever hard to push? does the engine actually turn over?

Where is the clicking sound coming from - inside the cases mabye?

it isnt really a click, it is like the piston only makes one revolution throughout the entire kick, does that make sense?

yep, i understand what you are saying now, i just cant understand what would be causing it.

its possible that the little buggar in there that catches when you kick down on the starter is not engaging properly for some reason.

go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and pull up the parts fish for your bike, on the right side case, then you will be able to see what parts are in there/what I am talking about.

have you triedchanmging up your starting procedure? try slowly charging your cy,linder by slowly striking it 2-3 times and then jab it hard. usually works extremely well. take my bike for example: i CAN start it first kick, but usually im too lazy and i justr do it the way i told you. you can also try taking the storke to TDC before you really kick it.

T op D ead C enter, or when the piston is at the very top of the compression stroke. in your case, and in the case of all two-strokes, that is every time it is all the way at the top. it's the "hard spot" on thumpers it's every other time its at the top...

slowly cycle the kickstarter unil you feel it get hard to push, then slam it. did you come off a thumper before the CR? thumpers and two strokes require a different kick stroke, i.e. on a four stroke you need a full, smooth, thoruogh kick, while on a pinger all you need is a fast, quick kick. on a thumper you "push" while on a pinger you karate kick

no prob. it just requires a quick, crisp kick. if you try that on a 426 or any big-bore hi-compression race bike not equipped with the auto decompression, then get ready for the ER with a broken leg : when those things kick back, boy do they ever KICK BACK :

This may be really lame and obvious, but when I got my first CR nobody told me about the choke on top of the carb. It would take 10-20 kicks or more to start until someone said to pull the little lever up and bingo, first/second kick.

Cant think of what else would cause it to only turn over once per kick, unless you've sheered some splines off the kickstart, but you would feel it slip and not just resist turning.

i rode it today, and didnt have any problems at all. i would stroke the kicker a few times and then hammer down. it fired up first time. (maybe just coincidence) anyway thanks for the help guys, i think it was just my kickstarting routine that needed tweaking.

man, you didnt know about the choke?!? that must have sucked dude. ive forgotten the choke a few times, and that thing doesnt want to fire up for nothin.

what blitz said - kick the crap outta that thing and it will start first kick

he was also right about the karate chop thing, the harder the kickstarter slams into the footpeg, the faster she will start!

Here is a quick "cheater" for you. Turn the gas on, pull the choke on (for first start of the day, hot or cold out), then lean the bike all the way over until the handlebars touch the ground. You will see gas spew out of the overflow hose on the bottome of the bike. Now it is primed good. Should start in about two kicks. Works everytime!!
