Default cr250 clutch problems

So I am having problems with my dirtbike and don't have the money to take it to a shop to get it looked at. Last time I took it out I cannot get the clutch to disengage, I started it, pulled in the clutch all the way and when I put in gear the bike immediately took off like a bat out of hell. So after I got it back to camp I tried adjusting the clutch lever and cable to where it should be and it is still reacting the same. When the bike is not running I put it in gear with the lever pulled in and it just drags the back tire. Does anyone know what the problem may be and how to fix it? Thanks

What year is it? I'm having the same problem with my 95. I was going to change the oil and see if that helped.

It sounds like your clutch plates are worn out. All you describe are cardinal signs of wear. You'll have to replace the fibre and possibly the metal plates depending on the wear. If you have the stock metal plates they are a soft aluminum compound that wears quickly. If someone replaced them with steel plates (you should if no one else did) then you might get by with fibre plates only. You should also look for grooving on the clutch basket tangs. If the basket is grooved, it should be replaced too. A quick removal of the rear brake pedal and the clutch cover will get you inside to look. Ask some one in your area to help you inspect it if you're scared to do it alone.

if this is the first time ever doing anything like this, make sure you have a digital camera with you so you can take pictures with every step, clutches on dirt bikes a pretty simple to do, but if you get lost, at least you have pictures to help you through

I think if I remember correctly, someone posted a service manual for an 00-01 CR 250. Dirt Bike clutches are fundamentally the same so different years will be close to the illustrations. That will help you out very much! Take it easy!

Ok. It seems we have two very different descriptions posted for the same problem - as well as some incorrect diagnosis. This thread is a mess.

Answers to post #1 (orig question) - there are several causes for the clutch not disengaging. One very likely possibility is that the plates are stuck together from either sitting or from water getting into the transmission and rusting the sliders to the friction discs. Another very likely possibility is that the clutch basket is notched from years of use. The notches can keep the plates from releasing under power. Another possibility is the use of incorrect oil - make sure the oil you are using is designed for use with wet clutches.

Worn plates will not typically keep the clutch from disengaging. Worn plates will typically slip unless they are SO worn that they have basically welded themselves together (not common, but not impossible, either).

Beans (post #5) is "having the same problem with my cluntch not engaging". Beans - your clutch is having trouble disengaging from what you described.

thanks for the help, Mxtras helped a lot and described my problem the best. I will take apart by clutch and see if I can see anything that will answer my problems. It is an older bike so it is probably just caused from years of use
