can you give some more details? what jets are are using right now. whats your plug saying? does it run well after you get it started? How many turns out is your air screw? What condition are your reeds in? From what ive experienced the older bikes are a bit more finicky with aftermarket pipes. More then lickely the pilot is off. Try going larger on your pilot jet. Its just a matter of playing with the the settings before you solve the problem. Good luck and let us know what you find.

If it dies when you let it idle then you need to bump the idle up. Some people dont like the bike to idle some others do. try starting the bike without the choke. If it starts in less then "20 Kicks" then i would stay on the jetting road

idle , and just off idle mix is controled by your air screw. this will more than likely be your problem. youe pilot jet really does not start flowing unitl just after the slide starts rising.

take your air screw and screw it in and LIGHTLY seat it. then back off 1.5 turns. see how this is. make 1/4 turn adjustments until it's the best.

here's a quick field test to check for lean/rich pilot.

warm the bike fully.
while idling ( yea, i know you'll have to get to idle first...) open the throttle wide open as fast as you can. don't hold it open, just let the rev's ramp up.

if you get a bog sound it's lead.
if it burbles it's rich.

also.. you know how to read a spark plug???
this is mainly for main jet, but it works pretty well.
