Default CR 250 Cylinder

I have a 2000 CR 250 that I blew up in oregon a bit back and I am currently rebuilding it. I am in the last stages of everything, and looking for a cylinder for it.

I looked at Midwest action Cycle and they so far have the best price i have seen at 289$ my question is, what year / range of cylinders would work with my bike? or are there any that would offer an improvement over what I have now?

Thanks!! I am liking ATM! its pretty cool forum!

Welcome to ATM. I asked this question a month ago about an 2000 cylinder fitting on an 01. I think this will answer some of questions. Cylinder question

If the cylinder is in good shape and you not in a huge hurry to get it back I would send it out to get replated.

If you plan on getting a new jug I would try [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], great prices.

Hope this helps

awesome!!! thanks for the help!! I think i might be looking at a 99 possibly! I dont think i could replate it, the grove that the ring made is about 1/8" or so deep, not just small scratches. it was pretty catastrophic, i mean the head is also really smashed up from the bits of ring flying everywhere.

Sounds like the ring let loose...Did it look something like this?

yep pretty much exactly like that!!!! my ring came off so bad there were parts of it embedded in the head and into the spark plug. it actully looks really cool, but then i realize thats why I am riding my 84 cr and its not so cool anymore haha.

I think it was the 86.1 mph on the beach for like three minutes that killed it. an expensive lesson though. i guess i should have been rolling off the throttle every once and awhile, is that what usually does this?

I'd send to Eric Gorr for a overbore, 265 or 285.....

I try and jet a little rich for higher speed areas for the desert (open valleys). I have also had advice to going with an over sized float bowl.

A friend of mine looked at my piston, spark plug and cylinder after I grenaded it and said the jetting was spot on but the piston, rings and cylinder were way over the limit. He said the ring basically came loose and let go into the power valve. The interesting part was, I was not wide open (probably 3/4 throttle) out of a long sweeping turn and I heard the "crunch" noise.....thats all she wrote. One of the problems with the CR's is they love to suck dirt past the air filter. PC racing makes a gasket seal that eliminates the use of air filter grease. I was very hesitant at first but it seems to work very well.

Eric Gorr does great work. One of our fellow racers sent her KDX200 out to get ported and the report back is "this thing rips". The down side is waiting to get the cylinder back.

I can only offer following advice through experiences in my rebuilds:

Stock top end gasket kit and wrist pin bearing from honda

Pro-X piston/rings. They offer A,B,C And D sizes...seemed to have good luck with these but I have used Wiseco as well without a problem.

Service Honda has great prices on Cylinders but there is another company out of Ca that is right around the same...I'll find out later on when I talk to Chris about it.

Also, Try taking a picture of the trashed cylinder and email it to some of the replating companies. You would be surprised on how well they can fix these. If they can fix it....now you'll have a spare for your next top end...

Pay attention to the that low end (crank/bearings). I used a gallon of diesel to flush out all the debris 3 years ago after it blew up without a problem. If the bearing is going south your rebuild will end on a sour note.

Lots of rags, cleaners, manual (a must have), time and patience. If you need any help hit me up. Good luck bro

thanks man... yeah i flushed the shiv outtta that thing, I used lacquer thinner though, but seemed to get a bit out. i dont think my bearings are going bad, the crank feels solid, there is no play at all in there.

I think i might go with either gorr or RPM with my extra cyl when i have the extra grand or so. ill post up some before and after pics when i get it all done.

kkxr400; where in the desert do you ride? i was out at the plaster city/ superstition area not too long ago, pretty amazing riding out there.

Mainly Johnson Valley because of the races. Stoddard Wells, Red Mountain, Coachella Valley (my back yard) and Ocotillo Wells on a rare occasion.

Plaster is about an an hour and a half from us. I need to get down there to check it out as I have heard good things about the terrain. D38 throws on some good races down in the Imperial Valley so we are deffinately going to hit that up soon.

right on I race in D36 i am only in C class as i am a new rider, but it was a pretty good season so far (until I blew up my bike). plaster city is really pretty sweet, its really got everything for the desert, silt, sand, some trails, and some awesome high speed stuff.

With racing D37 were pretty familiar with MDR . Classy bunch of folks. When we put our race on at Slash X this year they worked with us to keep their trucks off our course, as they had a race coming up. Although we had one incident (pre running our course backwards during the start) it went pretty smooth.

By the time you replace the cylinder, head, and piston set you're going to be in the $500 range or fairly close. That's about the price from EG.....you'd be foolish to go back to stock
