Default Conversion of 03' Crf 450 to Cr 500 tech question?

I have a 03' Crf that is mostly stock, it just lacks that 5th gear grunt you have from an old 500. So having a 88' Cr500 that makes huge power, why not have the best of both in one. My problem is that the exhaust is in the way of the center down tube, I am a little uneasy about cutting the frame, so a custom header flange must be made. That means the motor would be raised in the front, piviting on the rear swing arm bolt to get the clearence for the exhaust, now do I have an issue with the gyroscopic affect of that in the way the bike handles? I also would like the option of still using the 450 for trails and the 500 for fire roads and motar use. Has anyone seen this done or have any input on how to make my bike a Cr500AF? Thanks

Not to tell you not to do it, but theirs a lot that can be done to your CRF to make it sing like the 500. Pipe, jetting, head work etc.

However, if you decide to do it, good luck. Should be sweet when it's done.

Any CR500AF conversions I've seen that were based on the CRF chassis required extensive frame cutting to make it fit properly. The bottom line: you can do it right, or you can do it half-assed. Only one of them will yield an acceptable product.

I have buddy who is looking to trade his 500AF for a CRF450. It's in a 99 CR250 chassis and looks really clean. He has only ridden it a couple of times since the conversion.

Let me know if you are interested.

I have a 2000 CR500 AF(and a 04 450). The problem with exhaust clearance is handled with a new Y section welded into the frame downtube. I have seen this question on another website answered by AJ (designer of the AF for Service Honda). In a nutshell, he said don't try it with the 4 stroke frame. You would be better off finding a donor CR250 2000 or later. You would probably be money ahead too after you sold your 450. There is no way you will be able to swap motors back and forth.

Well thats why I was thinking of raising the motor in the front to gain enough clearence to make a new exhaust flange that would have the start of the pipe come out at the stock 45 degree or so angle, but placing the motor that high in the front raises the cylinder into the gas tank, creating more fabrication of a tank too. All the brackets are no sweat on my bridgeport, its just the exhaust that has me thinking...How do you find the "AF" vs an alloy 500 in terms of handling and vibration?

Despite what you may hear, the vibration is a non-issue. I am new to 4 strokes, but my impression after a weekend on my 450 is that it vibrates just as much as the 500AF. I have taken a few steps to dampen the vibes on the AF. The frame and bars have been filled with expanding foam, it does seem to help a little. As far as handling, it is a major improvement over the steel frame bike. I just don't think you are going to be able to do it without cutting the frame though. Good luck, and if you need photos, let me know
