Default 94 CR250 Stubern Starter

Ok I'm going to through this out there to see what everyone thinks before I tear into this thing. I have a CR250 that I just picked up. I put fresh gas and oil mix and new plug in it. It just doesn't want to start from kicking it until my foot bottom is black and blue. Choke no choke don't seem to matter. I have my wife tow me down the road for a ways and it will go pop, pop, pop, pop unitl it lights off. I ride for a while shut it down and a couple min later no problems 1st kick every time. If I let sit for around an hour or so my problems start to arise again. Any help or Idea's would be great. Once she is running seems fine.

I would take the carb off and clean it, taking note of the jet sizes and needle clip position.

Might be a plugged up pilot circuit or too small of a pilot jet.

I agree with both responses. The chances of having a sixteen year
old dirt bike with a clean carb and good, or even normal compression
are not good. You should get 160 or better from compression test.
Based on your "jump start" results, I'm guessing the compression is
low AND the carb is a mess.

If it were me, I would replace the top end, thoroughly clean the power
valve, check the reeds, clean, check and wrap the electrical connections,
rebuild the carb and replace the clutch pack. Unless the previous owner
kept the bike in perfect condition (unlikely since he was selling it), all these
things are either bad or will be bad soon. Spend some money and time now
to sort it out or prepare to be bummed because your bike is constantly
screwed up. Most of this maintenance can be done using aftermarket
parts for big savings over OEM.

The '94 is a fine CR and with a little TLC, it will be a fast reliable bike for
years to come.

Thanks dogger315 for the idea's I believe since winter is fast approching I will do as you suggested during the winter months and that way I'll have a good riding year next year. I never took apart a two stroke before but work on road bike and cars all the time, I have a clymer manual and I'm guessing if I take my time it shouldn't be that hard of a task.

Sounds good. If you run into any snags during the process, post them
here and I'm sure you will get all the help and info you need.

Like you said, take your time and have fun with it. You're going to love
the results come Spring.

the carb has a combo choke/idle adjust knob which is very prone to internal sticking and even the brass rod snapping off inside. You can't tell until you remove it. If it starts easy hot but hard cold I would check this. When you put it back be very careful not to over tighten it (just make it snug or it will snap off at the cheesy plastic threads as they get brittle over time. a new one is like 35 bucks.
