Default 94 CR250 sketchy weld on cylinder?

Hey guys, recently my friend seized his motor on his 2003 yzf250; we found some guy on Craigslist and traded it for a 94 cr250 that runs. It takes about 3 kicks to start but has a surging idle. It has a 85 pilot, 175 main and a very sketchy weld. The guy 'said' he put a new top end in it, could it have an air leak causing the surging? Let me know what you think, and where to get a replacement?
What do you guys think happened?

Thanks for any help in advance, it is always greatly appreciated.

An air leak is definately one of the first things I'd check on. Probably was the reason it needed a new top end. As for that weld. Not sure why it would have ever needed to be welded there. Very odd place.

It was hydro locked the weekend before, was a race bike that was poorly maintained and was traded for a item built for $600. I'm not looking for criticism; I'm asking for help.

Thanks,

cool, i would just like to help you get out from under the "next" one.

since you have one that is probably in the same shape as the cylinder nuts indicate I would just see if that cylinder holds cylinder pressure and coolant and ride it until you can find a cylinder from 92-01 that you like better.

who said anything about criticism??

Okay, we will do a compression test and check if it holds coolant. Also, keeping our eyes out for a new cylinder. Those marks on the piston in the third picture look nasty, does the piston need replacing?

Thank you
