| I have an '01 CR that I love dearly. I ride both MX and off road and would like to pick up a second shock so I can leave one setup for MX and the other off road. Also would be nice to have one to use while the other is out for servicing and such. I'd like to buy the newest that will fit to improve chances of it being fairly fresh and I believe honda has reduced stiction and such over the years (perhaps even a new one off ebay). I'm not worried too much about spring rate and valving as I'll set both of those up to suit my conditions etc. If anyone knows what years and models (CRFs?) would be a direct fit (if any) other than 00-01's that'd be great! Here's a pic of the CR for good measure Last edited by bikepilot; 10-24-2009 at 11:03 PM. |

The clevis is longer starting in '02 for the CRs and all the CRFs are in- compatible as well. The only shocks that will work on your '01 without modification are the '97-'01. By the way, I share your enthusiasm for the '01 CR, the best ever motor with a decent frame and suspension. Stock, it's superior to any later CR. I'm enclosing a picture of the shock from my '02 so you can see the clevis. dogger |

| Thanks! Just to be sure I'm on the right page, the Clevis is the aluminum part of the shock that the lower shock bolt would pass though (and where the rebound damping adjuster resides) - correct? Is the clevis the only part that differs? Can it be swapped or modified to work? Thanks again! Josh |

To swap shock shafts, just keep the brand the same (Showa or Kayaba) as the shock you plan to use and you should be able to purchase what you need from Honda. In other words, if your '01 is equipped with a Kayaba shock, you can purchace a new '01 shock shaft and install it into an '06 Kayaba shock to get the correct clevis for your application. If you decide to use an aftermarket shock, some allow you to replace just the clevis. dogger |
