Default 1988 CR125 project opinions...(hey Dogger!)

Haven't said much about it here, but I "retired" from riding/racin' (again...) a couple years ago . Looking at an 88 CR125 as a project. Looks like a low hour neglected bike. Always liked the look of this year CR's.

The good about this bike: Plastic all salvageable except rear fender. Frame fairly clean. Nice wheels-spokes-seat cover-shock still seems to dampening left in it. Kicker and rear brake peddle seem tight.

The bad: zero compression-needs shock linkage rebuilt-cables, tires ect. Typical wear items all need gone over.

Bike has an FMF pipe and the ATAC(?) chamber present. Can that be done away with and replaced with a normal pipe set-up?

Was the water pump a corrosion problem with this year?

On the fence with this one as I know all kinds of gremlins may be lurking inside that little motor......

Could be a good project. I believe the '88s still had a Mag right side case
and water pump cover. The good news is any six speed CR125 (up to
1997) case and water pump cover will swap in. The bad news is all
but the '97 are NLA from Honda already (maybe a used one from EBay).

The ATAC can be blocked off no problem. As far as the rest, the 88 and
89 were the last of the case reed engines. Decent suspension and
handling, usual hard to find parts for a bike this old.

Probably goes without saying for any used tiddler, be prepared for "cans
of worms".

If you decide to go for it, keep us posted on your progress.

I got a 87 cr125 with a '89 Motor. I actually have aluminum Right side cover. Love that bike. I know these pretty well and I got a bunch of parts for them. Let me know if you need help.

Been sniffing around some parts suppliers and it looks like lots of stuff is NLA. I've passed it along to a friend more adventurous than me! He better let me ride it when he gets it done......

Ever heard its not the kill its the hunt. About 2 years for me to gather all the parts I needed for my 89 125 build. 3 years to complete it, would I do it again? Heck yes already thinking of my next project..

Understand the decision to "punt", Andy. Parts for a lot of the 80s CRs are
drying up, and if the bike is rough, cost could go up in a hurry.
