Default 1986 CR 125 Problems

I am a newbie.
well to start it off when the bike is cold it does not like to start. It usually takes some screwing around with like taking the plug out and cleaning it and putting it back in. It usually take about 15-20 minuets to start it when its cold. but when its warm it starts on the first or second kick.
what could be wrong with it? Is it the mixture of the oil? I am currently using 40:1 with Br8es NGK plug. Should I use a hotter plug and a lighter fuel mixuture? anything will help thanks. I am going riding/camping this weekend for memorial day weekend so I am trying to figure this out before then. any suggestion i would greatly appreciate it, thanks again

~James

so what do you think I should mix it at? do u think i should get a hotter plug too? what two stroke oil do you prefer to use on CR's? thanks
yeah because when you start the bike on a brand new plug it starts on first kick and then if you let it sit it won't start. if you take the plug out it is pure black. what do you think i should do?

thanks again

First off a hotter plug is not the answer, the correct plug for the bike is a BR9EG. You mix is fine that wouldn't cause this.

Question: How old are the reeds in the bike? If you can't answer probably wicked old.

I'm betting the hard starting is possibly due to worn out reeds. This bike is before carbon fiber reeds epoxy reeds (white colored) wear out faster typically hard starting from cold = worn out reeds.

I had an '86 CR 125 for a long time turst me it doesn't take no 15-20 mins when cold to start. When everything is in good order try more like 2 kicks when dead cold to start. Stock jetting was actually spot on from the factory.

Either your pilot jet is clogged, your float level is incorrect or you have low compression. Disassemble the carb, soak it in carb cleaner, blow it out with compressed air. The set the float level according to the manual. While you are at it, check the compression. Pull the manifold and make sure the reeds aren't chipped as well.

BTW, when it runs, does it have a lot of blueish-white smoke? If so, you also have a crank seal that needs replacing.

Could it have something to do with the needle and the Jetting? could you just adjust the needle? would that make a difference? How do you adjust the floats? I don't have a manual and I am going riding/camping this weekend for memorial day weekend. What should I do to fix the problem?

There is a measurement that you need from the carb to the top of the float, u should be able to get that from your local honda shop. But Start with what Dave said cause you have at least one of the problems he listed. FYI cleaning the carb is easy place to start, if your not comfortable, run ur carb into a honda shop and have them check the float level.

There is a good pictorial posted by Faded in the archive section. Start there. I want to say 16mm is the float setting. Check his post for procedure. If yours has the pj carburetor as I believe it does, you can also try this: Screw the enrichenor all the way down. Don't just push it down,,screw it down tight. It helps with some chronic richness problems when those get old. It will no longer idle, but it is a cure for some of them that foul plugs.

GET A MANUAL. You are pretty green it seems, and that will help a lot if you get it and read it. You can understand and ask better questions too.
