Hi There! New the forum, and this looks like a busy place!

Well, as I am sure many of you started, we have picked up a couple of bikes for the kids (9 & 13) to begin enjoying. But first, we have to work on them together. I imagine there is lots to do, but some initial guidance would be a big help!

The first project is an 82 CR80R. The previous owner claimed ir ran great, but sat unused for a couple seasons. When we saw it, it would sputter and rev, but not keep running. My eldest son decided thje price was ok, so we bought it with the expectation of getting it running. After an initial carb removal and cleaning (was pretty clean), I was eventually able to make it catch once for about 5-10 seconds, but that was it.

So far, we have:
Removed, cleaned, and inspected the carb - jets and float seem ok (how can I tell if they are not?)
Pulled head and piston - all ok and can reassemble w/o problem
Pulled clutch cover off - looks good.
Removed flywheel cover - about to pull flywheel to check stator

We are about to remove the front sprocket and shift pedal (both tack welded to the splines!) to split the case so we can inspect the inside. There seems to be about 15-20 degrees of rotational play in the front sprocket - normal?

Basically, any 'gottchas' I should be aware of? Tips?

Thanks for your time

Hey there. Thanks.

I am about to look at the stator, but how does one test that, or the coil?

As for the compression, it did seem low, since I could push the kick start by hand. It took a little force, but wsa possible. I am thinking this was due to bad spark plug threads. I am going to try installing a helicoil to remedy that. If the plug does not stay seated, I'll have to get the head replaced. The rings looked pretty good, so I am hoping that is it. Unfortunately, I won't know until those threads are repaired/replaced.

How "fresh" is the gas?
I had a Husky lawn tractor that would not run on gas unless it was from a station that had a lot of turn over. It hated stale gas....

It is good. The person we bought it from claimed the gas in it atthe time was old, and that is why he couldn't get it started. I drained it, cleaned the carb (didn't need it), and put in fresh gas.

it could be your kill switch try unhooking it and see if it will fire if it isn't that then it could possibly be your spark plug if you haven't replaced by now, i have one of my own and i have had the same problem
