I have a problem with the OEM plastic fork protector rubbing on the fork tube (brake-line-connected right hand fork - looking at the bike). Seems on the CR, a small wear ring sits at the bottom of the fork tube, which attempts to prevent the fork protector from contacting the fork tube. When the ring wears thin (down to the fork tube) ones fork protector rubs on the tube. Ive attempted to adjust the front brake line, thinking the tension of the line connected to the fork protector maybe an issue - didnt seem to have an affect. Ive adjusted the position of the brake line on the protector - ditto. Ive also tried some rubber and thick tape to protect the tube - after a days riding, it needed to be replaced. Does anyone have any recommnedations or opinions on .., -Have other riders experienced this problem with the CR? -Are there after-market wear rings which are "thicker" or more durable? -Are after-market (ufo, acrebis) fork protectors a different fit or shape? Is there less wear on the wear ring/tube using these aftermarket products? -Other solutions? Thanks! Last edited by AustoUS; 02-27-2006 at 01:04 PM.

Yep do what Silver Fox said. It just looks like a metal ring around the fork. Mine was bad and caused the same problem on my 01.

on my 01' cr-250 i have the same exact problem. it stems from the constant pulling by the front hydraulic hose going to the brake. this fatigue weakens the 3 bolt holes in the plastic guard and it begins to tip toward the fork. The large plastic front brake disc guard is not needed, the bike looks much better without it. the disc guard is secured by 2 bolts. by freeing these 2 bolts i made a brace that bolts to the 2 disc guard holes. then bends up 135degrees to bolt to the hydraulic line clamp at the top of the fork guard. i made this brace to provide a forward pull on the fork guard keeping it away from the fork. i made mine out of stainless steel for strength and corrosion resistance. if you are interested in seeing a picture of the brace, post your email address on a following reply to the original thread you wrote and i will send you a picture of it. later.

I have the same bike and had the same problem. Now this will sound silly. . . .but it works. Get a large zip tie from the hardware store. The ones that are about 3/8" wide. Tie it to the bottom of the fork where the guard rubs. Use some pliers to pull it really tight so it will not come loose easily. This will let the fork guard rub on the tie and not the fork tube. WHen it wears out, replace the zip tie. Cheap and effective! DPinDet

Hey the thick zip tie is a great idea. I have the same problem with my 2000 CR. What helped me was to loosen the brake cable bolts and the two bolts that hold the fork guard. Then I grabed the whole thing and mossed it into a better position making positively sure the brake cable was not stressing the guard. I still like the heavy duty zip tie idea.

Unfortunately we no longer carry Ride Engineering products. For some reason our distributor stopped carrying them. |
