| I received alot of advice about pipes and so forth for my 05 YZ250. I wanted to share my experience and it may save you guys that are interested some $$. The stock pipe is almost identical to the Pro Circuit pipe in size and dimensions so I was advised that the biggest power gain I would notice would be from changing just the silencer. I went with the Pro Circuit 304 "Factory sound" (long not the shorty). It made a noticable difference in over rev and it pulls forover. With the stock set up there was a noticable drop off on top. With the 304 silencer there is no drop off and the bike is noticably faster . 3rd and 4th gear pull forever and there was no loss of low/mid power. Basically you can get the performance your looking for without shelling out the $$$ for the pipe and silencer. If your lookin for bling, then that is something entirely different. | your writeup of the stock pipe and PC silencer is exactly what im useing on my 04 YZ250. and my bike reacts the same as you discribe your 05 is doing. so i guess it just goes to show theres consistancy there somewhat for the newer YZ,s and its not just a case of "well this works on this bike but didnt on this bike" but as you said if bling is a factor then youl soon look for a pipe to add on. i myself was thinking of adding a gnarly pipe to the mix but after your conclusions being said the same as my bike i may not bother now |

Good to hear Satch! Did you notice much difference in tone? I would imagine that it would sound less choked up and bit more crispier. Thanks.

Hey Satch, what would be the difference, if any, between the long or shorty PC silencer, or with an FMF maybe???

Cool, thanks! I was wondering the same things. I always noticed the stock pipe was best on my '00, '02, and '03 YZ250. So, now I know it holds true for my '05. I've only been indoors with it so far. I have noe idea how it acts out of third gear! Can't wait for outdoors!

Do you think it would work the same way with a 2002 yz125?

I don't know if this will help, but I couldn't tell much, if any, difference in power between my slightly dinged stock pipe and FMF Fatty pipe. I experienced most gains from shorty silencer. I purchased the pipe second hand off eBay for cheap mainly because of looks. So it didn't really worry me that it didn't improve much. |

I believe what is happening is the manufacturers have spent alot of years/time working on pipes and because of noise etc they have more restrictive silencers than they would really like to have. That is where the aftermarket silencers come in and make a noticable improvement. OF course if you replaced the pipe and the silencer at the same time you would feel an improvement....but it's the silencer doing the majority of it.

Faded suggested I measure the silencers and compare (just for grins) PC 304 13" length 1" diam core 9" around Stock 15 1/2 " length 1 " diam core 10 1/2" around

Very Nice write up Satch about the silencer, Im thinking about going with the R-304 shorty, rather than the factoy sound longer one. Do you think longer equals more simular to stock power, but increase in top and mid range, and shorter equals more low end, with maybe loss on top?

honestly I can't comment on the difference between the two as far as power. I wanted the"factory sound" because it has deeper tone than the shorty.....coming off a thumper I wanted it to sound less "125 like" LOL.

Those of you considering the Pro Circuit silencers, they are available through the ATM store for $99 plus shipping. Just PM me, as they are not yet in the store. Just thought I'd let you know.

If the core size is the same then any gains come from the change in length. Cut 2.5 inches of the stock silencer and you have the same results for no money. I've tried FMF,Doma, stock and shortened stock and DEP silencers on the same pipe and honestly could notice no difference apart from the sound. The DOMA is the only one with a slightly larger bore. The front pipes did make a big difference. The FMF SST detonated all the time even with massive jets and race gas. Got rid of that, replaced the piston it had killed and fiited the DOMA, way better. Back to normal jets and all was good with loads more bottom power. Trashed that and fitted the stock pipe. Wow where had all this smooth power come from. An awesome pipe. Killed that an now running a DEP complete system. Seems really good so far. revs out sweet and no loss of power over stock. Stick to stock or just choose the particular look you like. Thats just my opinion.
