i have only been riding for a few years but i do own a 2000 yz 250 and i don't think you'll enjoy it too much in the woods. the bike wants to be opened up and ridden hard. i acutually ended up in the woods a couple of times with that bike and it wasn't fun for me.

A YZ250 is a purpose built motocross racing bike. While it can be a capable woods bike, that's not what it was designed for. If you feel that the majority of your riding will be trail riding then I think it would be more cost effective, and you would be happier with something like Yamaha's WR250.

get the bike- i used to have a yz250, and had a great time with it in the woods- i had it set up up like a straight motocross bike, and did very well with it- now i have a rm250, and have more fun with it since it is setup for the woods- mine has had the suspension done by RG3, and some other mods like a flywheel weight to make it better for the woods- the yz250 is a great bike- u mught want to do some suspension work to make it better for the woods, and maybe a flywheel to lessen the "all or nothing" thing-

I also have a yz250 that mainly gets ridden in the woods/trails. I have added an 11 oz flywheel weight, and a 3.1 gallon fuel tank, and that made all the difference in the world. To be honest, I've never ridden anything else in the woods, but I would think the YZ250F would be a great woods bike too. Make sure you get some good handguards, or you will need to have extra levers on hand.

I have a 2000 YZ 250 and the bike is like a bull in a china shop in the woods but I still have fun with it. I don't think that you would have any fun with a trail bike at a motocross track or at the sand dunes though. I really would like to get a four stroke mx bike so I can burn straight gas and get a little bit better lower end though.

i was thinking about getting the yz250f because it has good bottoom but i think i would outgrow the power a little too easy. Most of the time i only ride trails to get to a sand pit. i ride at a homeade track i made which is in a pit through the woods. i know the yz250 isnt a trail machine but i have seen people fly through singletrack and tight stuff. what is a good intermediate tire that sticks to the sandy stuff but is also good for the rocky trails ?

We've had really good luck with the Maxxis IT. It hooks up well, wears very slow, and isnt all that expensive. Another choice would be the Kenda Millville.

I would suggest that you get a 4-stroke. Ive rode a 2000 YZ250 and it just wants to scream and stay at high rpm's. Plus if you are riding tight woods, you might foul a plug. Go with a thumper so when you need the bottom end it will be there.

I like to ride mine in the woods too. It all boils down to how you like your ride. Like nicster said, its kinda like a bull in a china shop, but always FUN!

i think im going to get it rather than the 4 stroke. A well tuned 2 stroke will never foul plugs ! i'll buy a couple platinums for it also. Im going to try it on the trails and if i dont like it ill add a flywheel weight. Trails is only 40% of what i will be doing.

I think you'll be pleased with a 2 stroke. I've yet to foul a plug on mine, but maybe there is some luck involved in that though. I enjoyed trail riding on my XR400 that I started out on, but IMO the YZ is ALOT more fun to ride..trails..in the open..anywhere for that matter. I'm considering a flywheel weight also, so if you go that route, be sure to post how you like it.
