It would help to know what it is doing.

Replacing the friction discs is pretty simple - remove the clutch cover then remove the hat from the basket, remove the old discs and replace. You can do it without even loosing any oil if you lay the bike over on it's left side.

yeah its not really too hard, when you take the cover off, remove the five or six bolts and springs. you wont really be able to tell the difference until you hold the stack of new plates and compare those with the old ones. you should be able to tell a difference in height, as in the new plates are thicker. this is good, and the reason your discs are bad is because the old ones arent thick enough to grab.
the new pack should come with directions. if not, just put the new ones in the way the old ones came out. i have a honda but its probably the same. with mine its steel, friction, steel, friction, etc.
when they are all in put the basket cover on and then the springs and bolts.
next you put on the clutch side cover, put in new oil, and ride your bike.

before you put new plates in you need to soak them in tranny oil. And I believe on the yamahas you should start with a friction and end with a friction. The old clutch will look fine, but they do burn up, it happens!

Make sure it IS the plates! How many people replace plates over and over and that's not it. On an older bike I would DEFINETELY replace the springs as they are cheap anyway. They DO fatigue especially if it has been really hot from slipping. Also, check for how much wear is on the pressure plate. This is the outer most aluminum piece that first comes off after the bolts and springs. These are about 90 bucks from yamaha but I guarantee it is probably worn out if you are ahrd of the clutch.

Just soem things to check, no one ever told me. Took a while to learn. in my opinion it is seldom the darn plates.

Soaking the plates is not required. When you start the bike up just disengage the clutch a few times and they will have all the oil they need. "Soaking" is a misnomer...the oil does not actually penetrate the fibre. The factory does not soak them on your new bike! JMO Tdub

have you tunr the outer clutch disk(the one hold by springs) into right position?
its easy to turn it wrong and the clutch donīt work because disk will get stuck on the inner wheel..
