yeah uh, soak it in gasoline.. then light it on fire.. JUST KIDDING!! You can wash it in soap and water in a bucket or something.. then dry it out by squeezing it and soaking up the last bits of water with rags. then you want to coat the filter in some air filter oil, but not too much. Just enough to lightly soak the filter. While the filter is off, check the inside of the airbox for dirt particles that might get sucked into your carb. And clean the seal where you put the filter back on.Also apply some light grease to the seal so no dirt can leak into the airbox.
IMPORTANT:Clean your airfilter after every ride, its easy to do and it is proper maintnence to make your bike last for a long time. If the filter is trashed, like tears in it, or it just looks like total crap, go buy a new one- they last a long time.

Take it out, wash it in air filter cleaner or soap and water. Then wring it out and let it dry by either blowing it out, soaking the moisture with a rag or letting it sit in the sun. While the filter is drying you can take a damp rag and clean out the air filter bos. Once it is dry you can take a 1 gallon ziplock bag and dump about a 1/4 cup of quality air filter oil. I like the No Toil stuff, very easy to use and clean up. Once you have worked the oil into the filter inside of the baggy then you can put it back onto the filter cage and put it back into the box. Make sure that the air filter bolt is good and tight, but not too tight that it breaks things or strips. Just make sure that you dont over oil the filter, it will make for hard starting or no starting at all of your bike. You want to let a couple of hours go by before running the bike too so that the oil can set up on the filter.

Buy a Moose Racing filter with a super seal base and you can skip the grease on the base. You need to let it sit out for a while so the alcohol in the filter oil can evaporate. Coverage is what you are looking for, not saturation. There are different brands of cleaners and oils, some people have preferences. I do not.

Ive been soaking mine in gas for years, with no ill effects. Its really much more effective than soap and water IMO. Just make sure you squeeze it to wring it out. Dont twist- youll tear it.

I'll have to second that...Moose filters combined with No Toil are the bomb!

It is also extremely dangerous.

Yeah, you've gotten away with it for years, but that doesn't make it a safe nor an intelligent plan of action.

It only takes one time for this process to go bad and the rest of your life is going to be drastically changed for the worse and that change will be permanent.

I clean mine with Simple Green and water and they get just as clean as using gasoline and I don't have to risk becoming the Human Torch to do it. I've also used TwinAir's cleaning solution and it also works quite well.

Gasoline belongs in the fuel tank. It should never be used as a solvent. If you need a petroleum solvent, use Kerosene or Mineral Spirits or some other solvent that has a high flash point and isn't nearly as dangerous.

Saying that I will at some point have an accident is a little over the top, wouldnt you agree? Gasoline is perfectly safe to use as long as youre smart about it. Well ventilated area, wear gloves, use in the shade... oh, and dont wave a lighter around it. :

I have no opposition to twin air's cleaner, but when you compare the price per gallon... ill take my chances. Ive been doing it for years, and as long as youre careful, theres no reason not to. Chances of getting hurt RIDING the bike are "slightly" higher than the chances of getting hurt while working on it.

I use and like the Twin Air cleaner too( I just bought a gallon can two weeks ago)but the only ingredient listed on the can is Mineral Spirits. I also keep a gallon can of this in the garage, I won't even go into the price differential between the two. I'll just say I am a brand name junkie, I guess.

I use Ready filters which come preoiled including a sanitary pair of gloves to do the install. When they get dirty I discard them. They sell on ebay from yamaha of troy for 25.00 for three. When you consider the price of filter oil and the possibility of a tear in an old one from cleaning it they are cheap insurance for maximum performance.

no sense in learning (or teaching) an unsafe practice. used gas for awhile, there are better ways. a washing machine will clean a filter better than most people will by using gas. you get more rinses. havent used gas or solvent since 1976. you also don't have something harmful to dispose of, or something that is as harmful at least. filters really do last longer, and you don't expose yourself to something that is dangerous even when it doesn't light anymore than you absolutely have to. anyone who thinks different just really doesn't understand.

i like to check to see how my filter was doing, and the easiest way that i know is to take a clean white towel (Marines can feel free to use a glove) and rub it around the "cleaned" side of the air box. if you pick up anything off a box that was clean before, then you know you need to do something different in the future.
