Is the yz 125 a good bike. what kind of ga does it take and how do you know when you go through a top and bottom end and what are the precedures to fix that. Also whould it be a good bike for me a sophmore 6'4 160 lbs? would it be a good trail, MX track bike?

as far as ive heard they are great bikes-it would need to have the gas mixed with the oil @32:1-depending on the oil. It will be hard to start if the top end is bad. You will need to post more details about it in order for us to know if it is good... How much are they asking???

The letter simply means the model year of the bike. I dont know if r is correct for 97. It sounds like a good bike for you to learn on.

Um its priced at 1700, i mean it says its in perfect conditon. Im not to sure if it needs a new bottom or top end, Im just wondering how i would tell if it need one and how to do it. Also do you mix the gas as you do for like a boat motor? I also want to know i heard that you will have to replace the piston every year? I have many more questions but answer these for now thnks.

1. Checking compression is a way of seeing how much life the top-end has left. You can do this by getting a compression guage. You screw it into where the spark plug goes and kick away.

Or you can just push down the kickstarter and see what the compression is like. However this is not a really good wway of finding the piston and ring's condition. Even when my bike (2000 YZ125) has fresh top-end in it, it still doesn't have much compression. But it runs like a champ.
The compression depends on the individual bike.

2. To mix fuel/oil you just get a set amount of fuel and then add the right amount of oil to it to get certain ratio. The 32:1 is a popular ratio and offers plenty of lubrication at high revs. Something that is vital for 125's. I put 35mLs of oil to 1 litre of fuel.
And on the topic of fuel, make sure you run premium in it. Prevents pinging and detonation.

3. Yes, replacing the piston every year is not uncommon for 2-stroke performance MX bikes. Depending on how hard you ride it and how much you ride it. If you ride everyweekend and rev it to the moon then you will be up for new ring about every 10 hours and piston 15.

To get maximum life out of your engine internals you must clean air filter after every ride. Twice daily if it is really dusty.

They are great bikes. Have fun and feel free to ask anymore questions!!

Piston costs around US$70 and ring about US$10
If you ride pretty easy then your piston should last about 8 months maybe. I would be checking the ring n piston condition every few months though.

No sound. If you buy the bike, take it to a mechanic from the start and they can tell you everything you need to know.
If you want to find out whether the bike needs a new top-end before you buy it, you can just kick the bike over.
If it has good compression then that is a good sign. If it starts within first couple of kicks and then idles well then that is a good sign that it still has some hours left in the ring.

Just an idea for if you go to check out the bike.
BEFORE you go to start it, feel the pipe and engine. If it is warm then you can tell that the person selling it has started it up and warmed her up before you got there. Nothing to wrong with it, it just tells you that it is going to start easy and that he/she might have been worried about it not starting when you arrived.

Just by looking at overall condition of bike you can tell how it was probably looked after.

Good Luck!!

Maybe 150-200. I dunno in US dollars sorry.
Are you gonna buy this bike?
I would spend money on getting it running good first. Trust me, they cost plenty to keep running well.

Tyres, bearings, chain n sprockets, levers, perches: they all wear out pretty quick and drain your bank account!!

not bad on the trail for the TT,,,I dont think you will be at all happy with it on any kind of a track unless all you will riding or racing with are other similar machines to the TT.

Even on the trail I think you may like the 125 better as it will be lighter and have about 12 hp more if both are in good running order.
