Default YZ 250 project need a carb expert

Ok ive grown up on ATV's. I hate twist throttles on dirt bikes, so I put a thumb throttle on my YZ250. Best thing I ever did. Ive got much better throttle control than I did with the twist throttle. But it doesnt quite have enough throw. So im not quite getting WOT. I was wondering if a tri z 250 carb would work on my YZ? that way I can use a thumb throttle and cable from a Tri Z. Whatta ya think?

You gota be kind us right? I understand the atv part cause I use to have one.
See if the tri Z carb is the same dia bore. I bet its samller.

If you get it done let us know when the front dances out of your right hand cause your thumb isn't wrapped around the bar.
Thats the very reason why I put a twistie on my 250R 3 wheeler.

I would absolutely kill myself with a twist throttle. Twist throttles are great on street bikes but not for me on dirt bikes.

I have heard on twist throttles on Quads, but Thumbs on dirtbikes....lmao.

I dunno, I like thumb on my Raptor. And I like the twist on my YZ 250, but if I ever switched them I think I would die.

Were you able to mount a cooler and gun rack on the YZ?

MeCrazyPerson had a thumb throttle on his CR 250, he lost a good amount of movement in his right hand somehow, and couldn't twist the throttle on the 250, so he mounted a thumb throttle. Hey, whatever floats your boat right!

OR you could try using a throttle cam? I would assume them make them for thumb throttles like they do twisties. This would allow you to use the full range instead of having to swap out the carb.

Hey Ace..could you tone down the language a bit, please? I agree that a few people on here have been jerks.

Secondly, you should do a search on here for a previous user who went by "mecrazyperson". He had wrist problems and did exactly what you're describing on his CR250. I just can't remember if there was a post detailing it or not.

It would seem to me all you would need is a thumb throttle assembly and possibly a different throttle cable? Can't you get throttle cables made to the size you need?

easy fix ace all you need is a universial throttle cable that adjusts in the middle. the problem you are having right now is that your thumb throttle doesnt use enough cable to pull the last few mm out i bet you even have it adjusted all the way out. You can get a universal cable for around 20 buck that will adjust longer or shorter thats what id do. And on the different thing i have a twist on my quad as well as my dirtbike once i got used to the twist on my bike i could control it like crazy and it is smoother than my old thumb throttle but hay thats your thing hope you enjoy it.

excellent Idea. Yes it is adjusted all the way out. LOL Universal throttle cable sounds like the fix I need. Thanks quadfather. And thanks all for the suggestions.

Default thumb throttle

I broke my right wrist in 2000 and had to have it fused. Since then I have been forced to ride with a thumb throttle. I love the control it gives me except when descending technical trails because my thumb isn't wrapped. I have raced 3+ hour desert races in Utah with a thumb throttle and as long as the spring in your carb isn't bad (which on a 38 PWK it isn't) it's not too fatiquing at all. I have purchased a Terry Cable ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) throttle that is beautifully crafted and works great. Each time I buy a new bike I just call Terry cable and tell them the carb that is on my new bike and they make a custom cable to fit. The throttle was about $120 and each cable runs about $25. Perfect fit and finish and full throttle pull as well. I just bought a 2005 YZ250 last week and ordered the cable for it. It should be here any day. Here is the contact info :
