De seller could not say for 100 procent it was a 2000 because of the airbox.

But the front fender is a 2000 and the front number plate mounting of a 99 is in frontside and the 2000 one is at the back of the plate.

So if it is a 99 the changed the fork and i dont think this is the case!!



So can i say ive got a 2000????

Yes, but since the number of digits is different, so is the meaning of said digits. Without access to European data, you'll never figure out the VIN. The 10th digit of a US VIN is the model year; who knows what it means on a bike for the European market.

2000 Model has white airbox. Number plate bolts go in top of triple clamp ( 99 goes through front). Major difference is rear subframe is aluminium with square section tubing. On 99 it is steel and the side tubes are round section.
Also I think the 2000 model has both high and low speed comp damping on rear shock and a TPS on the carb. The 99 has neither of these.
At least thats something like it in the UK.

Hmm, the front suspension on my bike is a 2000 one !!

The rear schock is a 2000 version !! with the double settings (red anodised nut)

The airbox is black so a 99 one?

mine has a steel one, but i saw many of the yz at bicepics.com have alu and some have steel ?? Also some 2000 bikes have a black airbox

I think my rims are not original but i am not sure, on the side is written takasago excel build 8/98.

Maybe u can tell me if u have the same written on youre rims.

Hi eric,

My rims have the takasago excel markings but can't read any more than that sorry.Lots of pro clean and pressure washing has faded the writing.
All of the 2000 models I have seen have the aluminium subframe fitted as standard. This I believe is also 10mm lower than the 1999 steel subframe.

Regadless of year they are both awesome bikes. Mines an ex-Yamaha team bike with plenty of mods and absolutely flies. Just needs a beter rider....

I think I would complain to the shop that sold it to you and get back the difference in $$ from a 2000 to a 1999. They probably won't budge, but it's worth a shot. Do you have something like the Better Business Bureau you could threaten with ? Seems like they misled you. They should have known it was a 1999.
