Default Tightening the preload on steering bearings

     

I n manual it says to tighten the top ring nut 27 lbs then back it off 1turn
then tighten to 5 lbs.Can i use channel locks to do this i loosened that nut up with them? Ho w will i know when they seat OR reached the desired preload in the steering head? On a yamaha yz 250 -2013. THANKS

It takes some "feel". There should be no play in the bearings but the bars should fall to either side with a slight touch past center.
