Anyone changed from standard sprockets of 14/50 to say 14/48 on a YZ 250. I mostly do off road racing and I want to try this setup, but if I do not like it. I will be stuck with the sprocket for at least 6 months. I spend most of my time in 2nd and 3rd gear. I use the bike in a variety of terrain in Texas. Woods whoops anything and everything. Not too much jumping. Sometimes I use 4th on the long straight always. Most of my racing is hare scrambles. I'm buying a new chain and sprocket this week so any comments would be good. Anyone made this change? Any thoughts. The best thing I ever did on this bike was put on the Vforce 3 reeds... Rob

That's a pretty big jump imop, especially since you aren't using 5th gear at all. It will take away from your low end power and add some top end speed. I don't rece HS, but It seems like the low end would be more desired then the top end. JMHOP.

Your right, I should be going the other way. Say the example would be reversed, going from 14/50 to say 14/52. I'm also afraid that this might effect gas. I use an oversized tank now for the 2 - 2.5 hour races. I can do around 52-55 miles on a tank (unless its a very sandy track). we have one very sandy track on the circuit so I do a gas stop on that track, but not on any of the others. The YZ Seens to do pretty good on gas..

That would make more sense to me. I know a lot of the guys that ride crf450's on trails a lot like bumping the rear up 2 teeth. I bumped mine up 1 and did like it, but it was barely noticable. 2 would probably suit you better. Can't help you with the gas stuff. I'm sure it could change it, but it could go either way. If if causes you to ride in the same gear, but higher revs, then you'll get less, if you ride a gear higher, but with lower revs, you'll probably get better. Gas has never been a concern of mine (mx only) so I rarely pay attention to it except at the beginning of the day.

The standard setup on my YZ'F is a 48 tooth, I switched to a 49 for a while and I liked it more on MX tracks (when using mainly 3rd and 4th gear) because I could get the power down better. For off road, I like the stock 48 tooth. I noticed, when switching back to the 48 it actually widens 2/3/4th gear (Slightly) plus adds a bit on top. I might even try a 47 for off road... From a 50 tooth.. I would give the 48 a try, or just to be safe and sound a 49

I use my 05 YZ250 for offroad, I went to a 51 on the rear and have been happy with that. It was just enough that I didn't seem to have to use the clutch as much (before I put in the Rekluse) in the tight stuff and still has plenty on top for the fire roads.

Of course I have to ask....what year model YZ250? Go with a 14/51 if you have an 03 or newer YZ....you will like it. |

it is for all purposes a 4% change in overall gearing. if you had a 70mph top before you now have just short of 73. really big wasnt it? unless you got a real deal on the sprocket i am curious as to the motivation for the change. You may want to try getting your axle as far back as practical, last fall i rode a friend's yz that he had pulled the axle back on and it made a real difference in stability on fast sand, dont know if that interests you though.

Damn, you must ride at some speed! You would be flying in 5th with 14/48 gearing. It would be a blast in sound though. |

I thought the stock rear on the '03 is a 49 I might be wrong. Anyway long story short is I have changed the Baby F to a 14 in front and it runs like a bat out of you know what. It is jetted perfect with a Big Gun exhaust and even the YZ250F owners that ride it tell me it runs better than thier bikes. I have even raced it in the open class at one of my enduros and it really did a great job. I would say try it and see how it goes.
