Default Removing the Slide on a YZ250

Ok...getting ready for 3 days of riding with Motoman and I have been procrastinating on making some jetting changes to my 05 YZ250. The bike runs perfectly except it is a little rich down lown ...especially since the weather has warmed up.

Here is my problem....I can't get the screws that hold on the top of the carb out!!!! I have tried everything to the point that I have buggered up the screws..... any recommendations? Seems like Yamaha used Loctite LOL.

Get our your Dremel and the little cutting wheel attachment, make you some flathead notches, screw them out, replace them with some allen head screws.

What I'd do anyway.

I had to use pliers to grip the sides of the screws and break them loose, then unscrew them. I changed mine to allen head screws.

Did the same thing to my YZ 's carb. The 3 screws on the bottom of my carb are VERY hard to undo. Particularly 2 of them.

I think I will have to do what drman said and go and replace them with allen head screws!

Same story here. I didn't change mine over to allens, I just didn't get Mr. Meathands at Yamaha to torque them this time.

Satch:

They are allen screws on mine, are they not on yours? They should be easy. If they arent then yea use the vice grips. I had to do that on my 125. Also I doubt you need to change the needle. Probably just the pilot to a 48 should work fine. Did you put in that Vforce? If so then you definitly have to go to about a 45 pilot but the needle and main should be fine.

I had to use Vice Grips on my '04 250 to remove the screws after tearing up the screw heads. I replaced them and tighten them myself and have never had a problem since.
Went from a 50 down to a 48.

My parts came in today (Vforce 3's, 50 tooth rear sprocket, and some grips..) and I didn't have to take the carb apart-just off. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world but not the hardest either. Those little rings that tighten up around where your airbox and intake manifold(i guess..that's what the directions for the vforce said it was) were pretty devious. They had a little bitty allen head bolt and I had to use a star head for my screwdriver to get it out. I didn't have the right size allen head.

The worst time I had, though, was with ONE bolt on the rear sprocket. The rest were fine, but you wouldn't BELIEVE how hard the last one was to get off. I think some little Japanese guy was sick of his job and decided he'd put a little extra effort into this one.. Ended up with a nut that had big flathead screwdriver marks all in it (had to jar it loose with a hammer) but it still sorta fit the socket..enough to put the bolt back in on the new sprocket.

Anyways, I suggest putting some WD-40 on it and letting it set for a few hours or minute or seconds.

funny thing about sprocket bolts and nuts....it's all or nothing! Keep an eye on them now that you have had them off....they will loosen up on you.

Perhaps, but they last a whole lot better than those butter-soft phillips head screws that came from the factory.

Couldn't agree more!

And in my case it's the bottom 3 screws so water shouldn't sit there.

If it does, you should really stop storing the bike upside down anyway. It's not like your old BMX bicycle.
