Default Problem rebuilding forks?

Hi guys,

First, sorry for the long post and I would like to say - this forum rocks! Its rather addicting. I find myself on here with you guys several times a day! THANKS!

I am still in the process of finishing rebuilding my 89 YZ250. We are in the middle of rebuilding the forks now. We finished one last night, following all of the manuals instructions. However, after we put it back together and compress the fork it makes a woosh sound. Imagine pumping a bicycle pump. Everytime you push down on it fast it wooshes. Is this normal?

Also, the manual is a little confusing as to exactly how much oil to put in the fork. It dosn't actually give a specific amount. It says to fully compress the fork, fill to the top of the outer fork then pump the damper rod to get the air out. Next to fill again to the top, and pump the inner shock 3 to for inches to redistribute the oil. Then you check the level of the oil from the top of the fork to the correct level by adding or removing oil. Does anyone know if this is checked with the fork still compressed?

We are pretty sure we did it right but the woosh sound plants that little seed of doubt!

Oh yeah, also I forgot to mention - The manual says to bleed the fork? Is this simply the pumping action to remove the air bubles or is there more to it?

Thanks again.

yup, ya need to collaspe the fork tube and bleed the fork to remove all air out to get accurate oil height.

i'm suspecting the woosh sound come from this air pocket in the fork tube.

and just pumping up and down the rebound rod will help, remember to fill up with oil before ya suck in anymore air when ya see the oil height is getting lower

hope this helps
