If you don't already have a manual, you should get one. My guess is the motor seized, when you run a bike out of gas, you run the risk of running it too lean. At least that's my understanding. You'll need to pull the top end at least to see what damage was done. as for cost, I haven't a clue.

Three months? Well, you did the first thing that one of my teachers used to say: "don't do anything in haste".

I have learned the best way to keep from getting ripped off is to learn. Bikes are not very complicated; I agree with Char393, get a manual and give it a good read. Char393 is also right about the engine being seized. I am assuming that it is a two stroke, if you are haulin in 5th gear and you run out of gas you also run out of oil. As the engine runs out of gas it gets lean and thus very hot, since it is also running out of oil the combination is never good for the engine Since the bike didn't skid to a stop and you were able to kick it I would assume that the damage is piston, rings and cylinder. The only way to be sure is to take it apart. If your quick eBay has a manual for your bike for $3.95 but it ends in 2 hours. The manual is on Cd, I have one for my YZ250 and I like it. Do a search on eBay for parts; search for a 99 yz125 and also for a 98 zy125 since a lot of the parts for the 98 will work on your bike. Remember, you can always take the bike to the shop, just don't lose any parts. If you decide to do it yourself, resist the urge to cut corners, if you aren’t sure about something ask here, you will get help. Once your done you'll be pleased with yourself and you will know more about your bike. Oh yea, give dad a break, us dads have feelings too.

I think that if it was just rings you would be able to kick it over. If it won't turn over it is probably the piston and cylinder. If your lucky you just broke a ring and it got stuck in a port when you were kicking but you would have to be really lucky. I know when it goes wrong for me luck is never around. If you pull off the carb and the reed valve cage you can look in at the backside of the piston. If you pull off the pipe you can look at the front. If it looks smooth things are probably pretty good. Both of these things are pretty easy to do and don't carry much risk even if you don't know what you are doing. If you can see the piston you might try using the rear tire to move it. Remember the kick-starter will only move it in one direction. If you put it in gear the back tire will move it in the other. Be very careful because you will have a lot of mechanical advantage with the tire, more than with the kick-starter. Put the bike on a stand and have a friend bump the wheel while you look at the piston. If it looks smooth and moves a little you might be lucky. If it moves a little resist the urge to move it a lot, things are still broke and it still has to come apart. You can still do more damage by moving the piston but if it is a broken ring it may let you move it backward a little. Either way the jug has to come off.

I seized a piston in my ultralight and the engine quit. I landed and tried a couple of times to restart it, I didn't know that it had seized. The pull starter worked but it wouldn't start. Like you I was exhausted and took a rest. When I tried again it wouldn't even turn over. I think when it cools down it locks up. In my case I needed a piston, rings and cylinder, that day I was lucky.

The ultralight is a bit different than a bike. The engine is a Kawasaki 340 from a 1970's snowmobile. I got replacement parts from eBay and did the work myself for about $175.00. Being old the parts are harder to find but if you wait long enough it will show up. In my case I had a crankshaft seal fail and cause the engine to seize.

once you do it once you'll realize how easy it really is. i used to know nothing about working on my bike until i started trying, now i can put a new topend in my bike in like 5 minutes its really easy if you just take the time to try it. P.S. if you do it yourself make sure you drain your antifreeze before you take off the jug or it will all go into the bottom end. i did that my first time.

I would second what Bitshifter and Charr said. Get a manual and do it yourself. You'll learn a lot and be able to fix your bike cheaper, better and faster than taking it to the shop. You'll also learn more about your bike and it will run much better for it. If you need help just ask on this board and you'll get answers. Here's a good Quote ( Catch a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime)

Haha I just did the same thing with my bike last august. Im sorry to hear that you have to go through all the pain in the butt too! Make sure you have the right parts, get a manual, and go from there. Dont try this by yourself, go to a shop then try ebay. ALOT cheaper! You can get parts for your bike years 98-00. Good Luck!
