Default New to MX need Suspension setup help YZ250

Hi,
I have just bought a 1998 YZ250 and as always it needs setting up.

At the moment there is very little suspension travel, it is very stiff and the rebound is very fast.

I weigh 176lbs (80kg) and am a novice/inter rider. I ride on soft mud sand and gravel.

I have been on my mates 05 CR250F which he had setup for him and it is a lot softer and rebounds a lot slower.

Please can you help me on adjusting/setting up my shocks.

Also what is the best tyre pressure to run?

Thanks a lot
Luke

Set the sag to around 100-110 mm and then see how it works. Then after that it is just playing with clickers. It helps to wright things down so that you know whether a setting is helping or not. Dont go more than 2 clicks in a given direction either before you find out if it helped or not. If you have blown fork seals you will have a heck of a time getting the forks dialed in.

Back in '98 I raced a '98 YZ 250. The suspension was very good at the time. It won't be as good as your friends, but it will still be good. I weighed about 180 # at that time too. All I did was revalve the forks, and went with stiffer fork springs, one up from stock. .44, if I remember right. I ran the stock spring and valving in the back. I just played with the clickers. Have your forks and shock rebuilt first, with fresh fluid and such, then go from there.
