Default My 2001 YZ 125

Hi. I just a 2001 YZ 125. One of the things I am concerned about is taking care of it. (I dont have a manual yet) So, I was wondering how I should maintain it. (How often to change the oil and air filter, ect.) Thanks.

Well, first off get the manual, it will save a lot of people a lot of typing. If you havent done it already though, change the tranny oil, service the air cleaner and check the spark plugs color. If the plug is white then it is running too lean and you should probably have the carburetor serviced. If it is tan to light brown then it is good to go. If it is dark brown to black and sooty then the bike has been run too rich, but that could also be that somebody was running too much oil in the gas. Check the chain and sprockets, if they are obviously worn and bind when rolled backwards then you need new chain and sprockets. Lube the cables and check the brake fluid and you should be about good to go. Oh, and tire pressure should be between 8 and 15 #'s depending on your type of riding. The softer the terrain, the lower you can go. Your manual will aid you in what when and how you should maintain your bike though. I clean my air cleaner every couple of rides, but it really depends on the riding I am doing. If it is dusty or extremely muddy, I clean it after every ride. If it is damp but not muddy and low dust out then every 2 to 3 rides works. But I have been doing this for a long time and can usually tell by how my bike is running when it needs the filter cleaned. As for the tranny fluid, Yamahas like their fluid clean since they dont hold much. When it gets dirty the clutch gets hotter and has a tendency to slip or grind a bit so I change it about every 5-10 hours depending on the abuse I put it through. I also fill it a bit overfull too by about 2-3 ounces. It doesnt hurt anything, just dont overdo it or you can lock things up with too much pressure, or at least it will overflow and spray oil all over you and the engine. Other than that man, 2 strokes are as easy as it gets when it comes to bike maintenance. There are a lot of other things that I could tell you, but those are the most basic things to help keep your ride going.

I would change the tranny oil about every 3-4 rides and if your a racer like me the u should change the tranny oil every 2-3 races with the air filter just get like a coffee can and fill it with straight gas and put ur filter and if u gt a cover than put that in there and shake it 4 a good bit then wash it way good with water and your good to go 4 now

Okay, 1 more time- do not use gasoline to clean a filter or anything else. we do not need extra crispy fried members here. Use Twin Air cleaner (mineral spirits) or No Toil.

Nothing wrong with No Toil at all. Avoid it on a Uni Filter and it is great stuff. I am just an old school from the beginning Twin-Air guy. Use it in good health and roost on.

The solvents in NoToil will dissolve the adhesive in a UniFilter.
