I am glad you asked I was wondering the same thing but I am new and didn't want to tie up the board with all my questions. My bike ran rich from the factory I finally just got it jetted right and I am getting coffee brown plugs now so a repack is probably in order. I had one person (aquaintance) tell me he rides and he's never done it. I think that is blissfully ignorant however. I want to take the best care of my bike I can.

Repack it when ever you do a top end, It really isn't that important, unless you ride somewhere sound sensitive...

I thought the silencer was as important to a 2 stroke as the pipe was. (Well almost.) I guess i'll do that last then. I have a small list of some stuff I want to get done. Thanks.

Actually, the service interval on a 2 stroke muffler is highly dependent upon the oil ratio and type of oil you use. Some oils as you know burn significantly cleaner and create less oil deposits (spooge). A muffler's packing will also begin to blow out over time, which can have adverse effects. When the packing fills with oil spooge or blows out, the air is able to flow through the inner core with greater ease, and not out the end as it should. This movement of air through the poriforated inner core causes turbulence inside the muffler, directly resulting in and unfavorable increase in back pressure to the pipe, this also directly affects the bikes jetting, creating a rich condition. On top of not only being louder, the muffler basically cannot flow to its maximum potential. To maintain peak performance from the bike, I generally repack around every 25-30hrs, give or take, or when I feel it is needed. Last edited by HondaOnly; 07-09-2005 at 09:05 PM.

Yes that was my thought exactly, as a rule of thumb to do it when I do the top end. I will probably just get in a plan of doing these things in the fall. I will ride the summer and rebuild around fall. I think that is how I hear a lot of people doing it.

Granted my machine was not jetted yet and it was fairly cold out when I first bought it but even now, hands down my Bel Ray burns much cleaner than yamalube for whatever reason and everyone I speak to backs that up with their own experience. I noticed that x10. I will definitely be sticking with bel ray. I have 4 gallons of yamalube premix I wont even run. i gave it to the landscaper yesterday for his 2cycle tools and just asked for the can back when he finished using it. Didn't know how else to get rid of it. I got four or so bottles I may run a little lean so I use them up but after that it's all bel ray.

I repack mine about every 30 hours, or whenever she starts to drool.

If your bike starts running loud and sometimes a small loss of performance is added with that, then repack it. The easiest way to know when to repack it is to CHECK THE PACKING, if it looks old and nasty repack it in most cases.
