Re: I am thinking of purchasing a 1995 zy250. Cant really tell you anything without some info on the bike. You need to check a LOT of things before buying a bike. Make sure the tires are good, and the chain isnt stretched. The sprockets shouldnt be rounded off either. Check the wheels to make sure theyre true (dont wobble when you spin them). Lift the rear wheel off, and wiggle the swingarm side to side. If there is any play, it will need swingarm bearings. I always open the left side cover, and wiggle with flywheel, to check the crank bearings. If there is any play DO NOT BUY IT. It will need the cases split for new bearings, and thats a royal pain. If he tells you oil will spill out, tell him hes wrong. The left side is the dry side of a 2 stroke. Look at the air filter. If its filthy, take that into consideration into the condition of the rest of the motor. Ask him how often he changed the oil. I do it at 8 hours or less. It should start up in a few kicks, and not smoke excessivly after warming up. If it dont wheelie pretty dang easy, somethings wrong. Find out how many hours are on the top end. If he doesnt know, do a compression test. Should be at like 180 psi i think for a 250. I would do a compression test regardless. Find what other 95 yz250's are going for, and whatever work it needs, subtract from there. Dont be fooled by killer graphics. The sickest graphics wont get you anywhere when you throw a ring. Dont be afraid to take things apart. If hes got nothing to hide, he shouldnt have any problems with you checking it out thoroughly. Good luck, let us know how it goes. |
