Default Exhaust port bridge missing

I was in the middle of rebuilding the top end and found that there is a small section of the exhaust port missing. I just bought a new piston and ring and went ahead and put that all onto the connecting rod ready for the cylinder and head. My question is...stupid as it may be, how bad would it be to run the bike without part of this bridge? I've been working on this bike ('98 YZ 125) since I bought it 2.5 weeks ago. Now I'm upset and don't know what to do about it. I don't want to spend another 250.00 for a new cylinder. What are my alternatives? Thanks in advance!

Don't even think of running it!

I'd bet that the ring would catch on the damaged bridge and ruin your top-end.

Replate that cylinder or get a new one!

Sorry to say.

You can get it repaired and then replated. Probably sightly cheaper than replacing entire cylinder.
Like Aus said, don't run it that way.

If you can get a brand new cylinder for $250 that is a good deal.

It cost me $200 to get my 99 yz125 bored lager and replated.

Where might I get this type of job done? I'm in Indianapolis, IN. and I did bring the cylinder to work just in case I had a tip on where to send it to get fixed. Thanks...been a trying time with this bike....just bought it 2.5 weeks ago and still have not heard a heartbeat!

Stormbringer...in your avatar, the little connecting piece of metal in the middle of the port is what broke off of my cylinder....I can't post a pic yet and I saw your avatar and was like THERE IT IS!!!
So my understanding is that it CAN be fixed and re-sleeved?

Although it is possible to weld up a new bridge, the cost would be pretty expensive. I would recommend ebay or new. Thanks for the plug Char, but believe it or not there are actually some things I can't do...not many but some LOLTdub

You could try [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. For strip, weld ,bore replate and hone, it shows $231.75. I don't know how much the welding would entail if that would include acually bridging an area that is missing. Their website has an 800 number you could call and ask.
At this site [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] they have new cylinders for $237.35 not including shipping.
Good luck

I broke down and ordered a new one. I feel better knowing it's going to be the way it originally was, but the wallet is hurting....

IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!! Finally got all the new parts in and meticulously put it all back the way it should have been in the first place....side note, really look at what and who you are buying from especially when used!!!! Put the finishing touches on, topped off the fluids with the correct amount, put some gas but not a lot in case I had to drain, pushed the kickstart with my hand a couple of times feeling the compression, and gave one kick..........she started right up no problem!!!!!!

I buy used bikes like I am going to have to do a COMPLETE top end. Just figure it in the price if it over a year old. Come on, a 9 year old bike that DOES NOT NEED A CYLINDER. Find some hen's teeth. If you don't personally know when it was replated etc, just consider that a cost of buying it. I got a 99 Yamaha 125 yz recently. It came on a trailer. I had less than 300 in that deal if you figured some labor I did at full value. Plating missing off the exhaust port bridge. made it a great candidate for a 144 kit. ( I just happened to have a fresh crank in a set of 98 cases that needed a home anyway.)
