clutch will not engage

Default clutch will not engage

i have a friend with a 95 yz125-his clutch will not engage so he change gears-what i mean is with the clutch pulled, he goes to shift a gear, bike jumps then dies-he has changed the oil, smoothed the grooves in the clutch basket-i told him i would replace the plates, and cable-what do yall think-thanks

From what you describe it sounds like the clutch won't disengage. Make sure the lever free play is set to about 1/8" and try it again.

If that won't work you may have to look at putting a shim on the push rod that the disenages the clutch.

What I mean by a shim.
When you take the pressure plate off right in the center of the clutch hub should be a rod. The rod extends all the way across the motor to a small cam that is rotated by the clutch cable.

Now some times the cam and or the rod wears. On the rod there is normally a bushing or cap that pushes against the pressure plate. The rod normally does not push against the center of the pressure plate. The cap it fits over the rod. What you can do is take the cap off, drop a small steel washer in the cap and put it back over the rod. This will take up the wear.
