Default clutch-push rod

Hey, first time workin on the clutch. On my bros 03yz125, the clutch cover threads where the oil check bolt is was stripped and so were replacing the clutch cover. I have a question about the push rod. I noticed it is pretty loose and I can push it in and pull it and move it around somewhat. Does that need to be in a certain position before installing the push lever to it? I know the teeth on the rod should be facing backwards, but other than that, should it be pulled or pushed back or what? I put everything back together and pulling the clutch is extremely loose, and I think the pushrod is the problem, or maybe I just put it back together wrong. Any help appreciated. I pretty much dont know what Im talking about, so if Im not making sense, Ill try and make things clearer .
