Hey guys new to the site, had a question for you guys maybe someone can help me. I ordered a new shift shaft for my bike and am looking to replace it because the local yamaha dealer is a jerk. 1. I need to know how to get it apart to replace the shaft. 2. What are the seals called that I need to replace, and 3. what fluids do i need to fill back up. Simple job. First - clean the bike really well. Then pull the right side clutch cover, then pull the clutch basket. Now remove the shift pedal and clean that area well. Push the shaft through. Remove the seal and replace it. Push the new shaft in place and replace removed parts. Having a manual would definately help you if this is your first time inside the tranny.

You will need to replace the shift shaft seal and the clutch cover gasket as well as the powervalve cover gasket. You will have to drain the antifreeze and transmission fluid.

Sorry to be so brief - I am a bit short on time.

Ok thanks man that def gives me a better idea of how to go about it. Also just curious of why you have to drain the anti-freeze? Also do you know a good place to order gaskets?

Well - it's been a while since I was in a 97 but I think the antifreeze passes through the clutch cover into the case below the cylinder, but I could be wrong. Like I said- it's been a while.

I order my parts from several places, but try these guys:

Yikes, So I got into my bike, got the shift shaft put in, tried to get the gears and casing back on but something that goes into the top end right above the antifreeze drain thing...yeah it broke. Best to just take it to a mechanic now right? Not sure what that piece would be called.

At this point, based on what we know you might be better off finding someone in your area that could come over and take a look for you.

Riding a motorcycle when you don't know how to maintain it can get really, really expensive.

Learn to work on it yourself - I have never met a bike that was able to outsmart me and I am sure you are a fairly smart fella. You just might need some guidance.

Hey Scott just wanted to let you know you were right! I fixed the bike last night. I broke the push rod assembly but had it welded back together and got everything back in. Now I believe I just need to eventually replace the powervalves (valve 1 & Valve 2) but thanks for your help again.
