Jonny,I am sure you can change the main seals without splitting the cases on his YZ250. You can change both on my CR250R without splitting the cases and I am sure his Yamaha is the same.

Default the 89 250!!!

I love my 89 250....just re-did it this winter. After powder coating the frame, put new plastic on it, and graffics...came out looking like an 03, well close to an 03.

I would tell you what gearing I have, but mine is a WR.

offroad101,

I like that reptillian look of your exhaust pipe. I need one of those rear master cyl. covers! Who's plastic did you use? My fenders are UFO. Your WR is most likely 14/52. Yeah the only main difference between the two is the trans gears - wide ratio vs close ratio, but preformance wise, the same. I'm trying to achieve the top end of the YZ with the bottom end of the WR...through sproket gearing. At least close. But I thnk your bike is awesome!!!

CoalPilot,
The plasitc is from Maier (spelling?)...ordered it all online, good quality stuff for the price. The rear master cylinder cover is a piece of aluminum from the local hardware store cut to fit.

It has been a great bike for me, very dependable.....and runs so strong!
If u want any more details on the plastic or the looks of mine, just let me know.

Thumbs up Re: '89 YZ250 questions

CoalPilot, I'm running what I believe is the original flat slide Mikuni.

OffRoad101, Awesome looking bike. I have mine torn down now for bottom end freshening. I was planning on repainting the frame and replacing the plastic. I may 'update' the color scheme for a more modern look. Did you get the plastic in blue or did you have to paint it?

Default The plastic

I ordered the plastic directly from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] they had a few choices on the color and so on, but I chose the dark blue plastic. No paitning or anything, but I did have to drill the holes in the plastic for mounting. Not bad, because the plastic is already dimpled where the holes are suppose to be, but not drilled.
The tank is another story though. I took it to a local shop that does graphics on boats and stock cars, he put a background of blue on it, then put the white/silver graphics over that. Problem is they start to bubble off after a few weeks...and no one I talk to think they can paint the tank. So it is either paint the tank or pull the graphics off ...and just go white with it. Not sure what I am going to do, cause it looks like I may be selling it now that it looks so awesome for a newer bike.

You can paint it but it wont last because the plastic has like a wax base to to it. I'm going the graphic route, but when they are all on, I'm putting a 4mil clear sheet over everything, (like the heavy clear they put over swingarm decals). That will keep it looking good for a long time and won't wear off!

Also, if you do paint it, sand it real good, and clean it acetone. Use an epoxy primer and paint (like imron) You will be surprised by how long it WILL last and be gas and chip tollerant!....But nothing stands up to crashes and wrecks! I wouldn't think of painting fenders or side panels, but the tank doesn't get that much abuse.

WEll, I wish I knew what to ask for sure. I have looked in the local papers and have not been able to find any bikes close to the same year....I know they would not be the same condition.

I may end up trading my mechanic for his 98 cr250 (fresh top and bottom) and then put some money with that. I would think if I sold mine outright it should be worth about 1,000. Would like to get 1,300 for it, but then again that may be out of line. It is older (89), but it is such a cherrie bike.

The closer I get to getting rid of it....I know it is going to kill me to see this one go. Funny thing is, I never was a yamaha fan, this bike fell into my lap a long time ago. But I LOVE this bike, I think it was such a well built bike. But since I can afford the newer bike, kinda thought I would be stupid not to trade now.

$1,000-$1,300 is very fair and reasonable if not a steal! I know of two ther 89's for sale right now. One runs but is mostly for parts and needs a complete going over asking $1,145 in MT. The other is Good but no where near as nice as yours asking $1,800 in NJ.

Yamaha made a good bike for sure. A lot of top riders prefer using the older Yam frames. I'll be keeping mine because the future is coming and the end of two stokes. I'll have a nice collectors piece and something to show off. I also have two 03 TTR's, a 125 and a 225.

Question Re: '89 YZ250 questions

offroad101, what brand seat cover do you have? I checked out the link on the plastic. I'm still trying to decide whether to change to blue or go back with the stock colors. The only seat cover I have found so far is a red stock replacement. Also, is that some type of thermal wrap on your pipe? Thanks.

The seat cover is made by Ceet, one of their no slip models. I am pretty sure I got it from there web site, but will let you know for sure tom (at work now) after I do some looking if you have not found it by then.

The thing on my pipe, is actually an aluminum shiled that was on the bike when I got it. I will have to call my buddy that had the bike before me and see where he got it, cause I will probably buy one for my next bike too.

Duffy,

Check out item numbers 3654773646 & 3656138107 on ebay. YES the 93 YZ/WR seat cover is the same and will fit the 89 YZ250.

I'm making my own seat cover.

The seller of those two on ebay actually makes them so if you have an idea of what you want, email them a question and picture/drawing and they will send you their phone number to place an order. They are located in AZ I believe.

yeah... it is just aluminum, I can take some closer pictures of it if u r interested in it. When I had it off it is just held on with hose clamps...I think he put it on cause he got tired of denting the pipe, atleast that is why I put it back on.

Coalpilot, I looked at the seat cover on ebay, that material looks exactly like mine, I think Ceet called it the Gripper Seat also. But I think I payed twice that for it though

CoalPilot,
Just looked in my Cahparral catalog, they have the pipe guard in there for around $32.00. Comes in gold, silver, or black.
