any thoughts on the totally new 05 125??? I ride a hondu now and am having second thoughts about the 4 strokes...they just feel big...the 2 strokes are like being on a mt.bike w/an engine... I hear talk of the power/torque is unreal on the 125, even when comparing it to the 4 strokes....any truth to the rumor??

It seems that the makers are catching on to something! Two strokes are still palatable to many, and in the end offer something that has gotten away from the 4 strokes: Two years ago people that were racing 4 strokes were running them all season and getting good results. Now, if you are in an area and a class where your competition is keeping them sharper and doing performance mods you are spending way more than you were two years ago, and a bunch more than a two stroke. I have an older yz with a big bore kit on it. It creams any stock 250 4 stroke and is way lighter. After getting on a piped wrf250, I wanted mine back. The new Yamaha's have a new KYB fork that makes them noticeably better. (The $ stroke has it too) For trail or play, I would way prefer the 125 with the big bore kit, so if that is what you are thinking of using yours for, or vets racing it would be my choice. You can keep it fresh for less. 6 gears is better for all around than 5. Yamaha and Honda both have tried to sell the public on the "less shifting" will make you faster with limited success. (It does make for a stronger tansmission which helps the factory stay light and together when they develope close to 40 hp and works well with their available choices of ratios.) But the one that is really beginning to interest me is the yz250. They can still be fitted with a wide ratio transmission and the entry price is quite a bit less than the 4 stroke. GOD, have you priced a pipe for a 4 stroke? I briefly owned a wrf450 (bought to sell mainly) and really didnt like it. I think I would have been happier if I had "YZ'd" it.

OH,,I say all of the above assuming that you can get "green" approval on whatever you choose,,that has lots to do with any choice.

I think it's 196 lbs, claimed dry weight on the 05 yz125

AND I think the AMA legal limit (for Pros of course) is 194lbs. That should tell you how light the bike is. THe most a "works" bike could be is 2lbs lighter!!

what's the dealio on the new zinger? it's either the 05 YZ125 or 05 KXF250. i also thought about the new RM250, it is supposedly very much like their old style bike- Razor sharp handling with a skreemer for a motor. the combo of forged, cast, and extruded aluminum parts on the YZ frame is simply ingeneous to me- they really tried to mimick the feel and strength of the steel frame with the 5-pound weight loss of aluminum, without stiffening it like the Gen. 1 honda's which were simply deltabox tubing frames. Ol Betsy's not lookin too good any more, i got to ride some girl's 99 RM125 the other day and it was much faster than the 92... i wonder what the 05 would do to my lap times Rob

oh yeah... the frame is 5 pounds lighter, engine 4 pounds lighter, and various weight savings with bolts, tripleclamps, plastic, etc. make up the rest of the savings. even if it didnt lose weight, i'd get the bike for the motor that is supposedly much better than anything out there so far. Rob

If you like riding the 125s I'd say go for the blue but if you want to try a 250 smoker out I'd say my choices are between the YZ and the RM. If I did alot of trail work I'd be hard pressed not to go for the RM. Dirt rider raced a bone stock 05 RM250 to first place in the pro plass at one of the local so cal tracks and said the feat is quite impressive for a stock bike. That's in the Oct issue of dirt rider in case your wondering.
