2002 YZ 250 Fork oil?

Question 2002 YZ 250 Fork oil?

Hi, I have a question about fork oil..I'm used to seeing 5w, 10w..etc..but the manual for my '02 YZ250 says to use "01" oil??? Whats that? Is there an equvalent? Any help would be great...Thanks

Welcome to ATM, sorry I'm not an oil expert I just buy the fork oil on the shelf at the dealer.

Ya thats what I'm thinking...I just want to make sure, I mean they don't say to use ONLY that oild for no reason...I'll have to call the dealer. Thanks

Fork oil is formulated for that specific application. The weight is not the only factor, there are additives that give the oil qualities to do what it is supposed to do. Send a PM to shocknut, he will be able to explain the differences in fork oil.

I haven't recieved a reply from shocknut yet. But the local dealer said that is the same as 3w. The Yamaha "01" oils is just too expensive. Thanks for the help

ya can use 5wt or ATF, Auto Transmission Fluid

The difference in the fork oils is "weight" or in other terms the thickness. The thicker the oil the slower it flows through the same size valving. This affects both rebound and compression. I think the manufacturers use something around 5 or 8 weight in most forks today.
