I have never changed out the rings on my own but I really think they are over-due because seems to be running with less compression and less power and i dont want to seize the engine - how difficult is it to do on my own and what all do i need in terms of parts and tools to get the job done right? i checked with my local parts supplier and the ring itself is only $18 but i am sure there are some gaskets and whatnot i need to get as well...?

At minimum, you will need a base gasket and the ring. There's really no need to pull the head, but if you do, you will need a set of O-rings for the head. Scott

have you got a manual for the bike? also make sure when you are using the torque wrench that the bolts aren't lubed up as it can mess up the readings and you may over tighten. Don't know about the 125's but I know on the 250 you need to either make or buy a special attachment to loosen or tighten 2 of the bolts on the barrel because they are recessed and you cant fit a normal socket in there. I know you can't bore these nickle plated barrels but i'm pretty sure you can can have them honed. Make sure the piston is facing the right way when you put it in...Wiesco Piston faces with arrow towards the front...put a rag under the piston when you are changing to stop bits of stuff and the circlips from dropping into the bottom end while they are flying round trying to take your eye out...I found taking photos or video while you go to be really really useful...good luck matey

Really good advice. A manual is probably the best investment for maintaining your bike.
