Well, I do not like to be the bearer or sad news but you have to know.
The 490's are extremely finicky to get them to roar to life. I've tried voodoo, chicken sacrifice all to no avail. I did the head mod to lower the compression a bit and it did made it a little easier but not by much.
You have to kick it with a stong leg or push start it. I now stop on a top of a hill when I stop for a break just in case that kickstarting it would not do it.
For mine, I put on the choke when cold and I don't give any gas and when warm, I never twist the throttle or it will never start. So basically, do not try to start it like you would a 125/250.
As for being worry to stall it? It never cross my mind of ever stalling it anywhere, if it seems that it could happen, I twist the throttle a little and that is the end of any worries about stalling.
Good luck

The 490's I have been around were pretty similar to the large 2 strokes I have owned. They liked to be really rich when cold. To the end that some of their owners started doing like I did for cold starts: I turn the pilot screw in until it is only about 1/8 of a turn out. If your bike is in reasonable tune otherwise, that has it running in 1-2 kicks well below freezing. Bad lower end seals cause low speed lean conditions that can make a hesitant starter even worse. I chose to use the air screw rather than have a bike that loaded up at low rpms and downhills.

Hot, all the big two strokes I have ridden and or owned liked the throttle held wide open. That is just what has worked for me on bikes from both sides of the pond. Bings were designed for starting big two strokes (flood button), and nothing else.
