Default '05 YZ125 Experience?

Moving from an '04 CR125 to an '05 YZ125 shortly. Anyone have any personal experience with the new redesign? Any problems to be aware of?

A little leary of first year designs. The '04 CR125 had carb defects, had to be replaced, and getting to right jetting was a challenge! Looking for less trouble in a new bike!

Make sure you check all of your nuts and bolts before you ride that bike, even the head studs, I've heard of several cases where brand new '05 yz's had finger tight head studs, but other than that, that bike rips.

Yamaha uses crappy hardware... period. Id take it apart, grease everything, and replace a lot of the hardware. Buy a bolt kit on ebay. They dont have every bolt on there, but they are of good quality.

i have heard that if you get a 2000 carb, everything works perfect, but i am not sure what years they were talking about.

The service manual has a closer jetting to what the bike should be. Bike came stock with 40 Slow Jet, 3rd Clip and 420 Main Jet. At stock conditions I run either a 27.5 or 30 SJ, 3rd clip and 430 MJ. Last Sunday, temp was 60F, rain and ~900'El, ran very well with 30SJ, 3.5 on Air Screw, 3rd clip and 430 MJ. Now on Saturday, the same setup with the air screw at 2 turns fouled a plug so will need to go to 27.5 as temp goes up. Not sure where you are located for elevation and temp but have found that the main jet should be either right on or one jet leaner. (Just in case, always check to be sure by finding a slope or hill and, after warming it up good, nail it through the gears wide open on top end and hit the kill switch/shut throttle. Then check plug to see if it is golden brown!)

Hope this helps!

I don't have any personal experience with the 05 YZ125. One of the kids who works at the shop has one and we ride together often. He has not had any probs with his. He got the first on in the shop and has ridden or raced it almost every weekend since he has had it. He said jetting was spot on and we ride 1200'-3000' elevation.

Or I can just answer the post!!!

The 05 YZ's 2-strokes are both incredible bikes. The 125 feels like a BMX bike with a motor. It feels extremely light. Actually a little scary over bigger jumps. You can really feel the bike. It feels very small in comparison to the CR and RM's. Doesnt feel as long as they do. Turning is awesome. I haven't ridden an 04 CR 125 but I have ridden older models. I think a 99 or 2000. The motor on the bike Dyno's as the weakest of all the 125's but every mag says it feels the fastest. Definitly comperable power to my 250F. Just doesnt have that torquey feeling of a 250F. They are very fast. Really surprised me actually. I thought I was going to have to do a bunch of mods to make it competitive but thats not the case.

As for issues, I've had none with either. I've had the 250 for 3 months and the 125 for 2. Jetting on the 125 is so easy to. The carb is very accessible. For the most part the chassis is really the only new thing. The motor is changed a little but it's not completely redesigned. The carb is the same carb they've been using for a while.

It's a great bike. Definitly a wise purchase.

i got to ride an 05 yz 125 man that thing is sweet. the front forks is what i really like about it. they are really plush but don't feel weak. it has awesome top end but dies out really fast if u don't keep it in the right gear. the ergo's felt realy good and the clutch was suprisingly easy to pull. i liked it alot, got used to it in 2 laps.

it is a pretty good woods bike. the best 125 mx bike for woods i've ever ridden. i was really impressed with the front forks. they were plush and soft enough to soak up the little rocks, braking bumps, and i got on a mx with it and could do all the doubles there.
its super light and easy to flick around i loved it

Gonzo,
Thanks for the feedback! I've heard nothing but good about the bike so purchased one last week. Could feel a significant weight difference just by straigtening up the '04 and '05 125 with one hand while it was on the stand. The '05 was like a feather!

Put '99 CR125 up for sale yesterday afternoon and sold it last night. Now debating selling the '04 CR125 or keep it as a "No DNF" fallback! Good to have options!
