Default Zip ties on spokes?

First off, Howdy! New around here.

I recently bought a 1999 CR250R and the guy who owned it had put a zip tie around the spokes where they cross "X". My bike has probably 60 zip ties around the spokes.

Why would you put those on there?

Should I leave them on?

That's something we used to do way back in "The Day". Actually, it started with saftey wire, then the zip ties came into vogue.

The thought was, if you broke a spoke, it wouldn't flop around, and do more damage.

I havent seen more than 1 or 2 bikes done like that in the last 20 years.

Welcome to www.spokesaver.com!

These do the same thing as zip-ties except they supposedly also help cool the brake rotors due to their shape. Judge for yourself. I just keep the spoke check as part of my maintenance and never have problems.

I had never seen it before. I'll leave them on there. They aren't hurting anything I guess.

Thanks for the info!

This evening I have to go get an owner's manual so I can service it.

When getting the manual, I would recommend getting the factory manual for your bike. The Honda manuals are phenominal and will have all the right spechs for your actual bike. You can usually find them on e-bay for pretty cheep....

you aren't the first to say to get the Honda manual. That is what I plan on doing, then later maybe getting the Clymer's.

I cannot believe how many people there are that don't have a manual for their bike. Most of them never did have one. I guess that is also part of the reason for so many messed up bikes.

Every broken a spoke at speed? Alot of desert guys do this so the spoke doesn't fly off. I saw a guy a few weeks ago fling a spoke off and ripped a nice hole in his radiator. Most use safety wire but zip ties will work.
