Default Won't Kick Start But Will Bump Start

Today at the track my bike started to foul a plug so I stopped riding and put a new plug in. From then on my bike would not start by kicking it with the choke on or off. But a couple of buddies help me push start it from the top of a hill and it took right off and ran great and hard until I would kill the engine. No matter if it was with in a second of killing the engine with the motor at full running temp. the bike would not start with the kickstarter but it would by bump starting it. What the heck could this be?

That seems exactly like what my bike does when it's flooded. Could it be that you're fouling plugs because you're way rich and just soaking the plug? I haven't fouled one plug since I got my bike. I'd check out the jetting

without seeing the bike, i would guess it would be either a bad Top-end, a clogged pilot jet, or floats sticking or way out of whack. does the bike idle, or at least run the same at low RPM like it used to? do you have the correct plug? do you have a weak spark?

Just about everything! Replace the reeds and be done!

actually yes, the reeds would definitely cause the problems you're having. they may be worn out in addition to being cracked. take the reed block out (since you're replacing the reeds anyway... right?) and look through the intake... you should not be able to see daylight through them. of course, if you have clear (composite) reeds you will see "light" but there should not be any visible gaps- the reeds should seal almost perfectly.

I'll replace them this week and see if it helps.

So is the problem the engine is getting too much gas and flooding?

Eddie, a jetting expert in Thumpertalk.com said he reason I have to bump start it is because it doesn't have enough compression. This seems right so I'm doubting the reeds will fix the problem. I've only put about 20 hours on the motor, isn't that quick for a top end to lose that much compression that it won't start?

If the reeds are allowing some of you crank pressure to return through the carb you will not get the same amount of fuel in the combustion chamber as you would when they seat. THis could be the reason you need the addition RPMs you get when you are bump starting to make up for the "leak". Once started the volume of air going through the system at idle and about will mask the problem.

I still haven't replaced the reeds but I checked my compression and it's 150 PSI. That's not bad, before I rebuilt the motor it ran fine and it was at 130 PSI.

Your bike has 150 PSI? That's plenty, I probably run my YZ80 (deperate need of top end) at 75 or less! I'm betting carb problem. Floats are sticking or the pilot is clogged.

I've cleaned the carb a million times, now it doesn't have any spark.

I would think that if it were electrical it wouldn't run period?

Will it still run when you bump it?

It ran when I bumped it, killed it and now it has no spark.

Check the wires coming from the alternator cover and along the frame. If you are lucky you will find a frayed wire that is grounding. If not you will be looking at either an alternator. (Hey check inside your alternator cover and see if you have some condensation in there. If so dry it out), coil or ignition module.

There is condensation in the stator cover. If I clean it out will it probably work? Is this a common thing? What's the best way to dry it out?
