Unhappy It can't punch it's way out of a wet paper bag

I have a standard 100cm3 scooter which won't accelerate from a sandstill on a uphill. When I open the throttle, the motor picks up very, very slowly and the scooter creeps forward reaching normal acceleration only after 5-10 seconds. Ordinary high speed running is fine.

I've checked out and cleaned, the carb(jets), air filter, variator (rollers), clutch. Petrol and oil tanks cleaned and refilled. Piston, cylinder and ports de-coked, battery charged and new plug.

What next?

Add some Wu-Tang booster to the gas. It's like octane, but it's made by the Wu and guarenteed to boost performance.

Seriously though...Not sure what a standard scooter is or what carb it's running, but depending on your weather, elevation, ect. you might need to rejet the carb for better performance. IMHO I would first start by setting the float level and then working on the slow circuits (pilot/air screw) first.

Sounds like the little centrifugal clutch, or rubber rub clutch, whichever it has, is too weak, combined with a too-high gear ratio and no power, for starting on an uphill. I've seen those scooters that would'nt even take off on grass, pretty weak.

What scooter do you have?
Do you have an after market exhaust or air filter or anything?

You may need lighter rollers.
The drive-belt might be slipping... need replacing.
You may need to up-jet from the standard jetting.

I had that same problem with my scooter after fitting a new exhaust and filter, it was really fast down hill but when it came to going up hill it almost rolled back down the other way.
I had to replace rollers with much lighter ones, upjetted 7 sizes, and took some of the exhaust packing out. I also covered part of the air filter (K+N) with some tape and it gave it more bottom-end, pulled off a LOT better after all that.

I think I've found a solution. A friendly mechanic suggested to change the clutch centrifugal springs as they may have weakened whilst appearing okay visually. I've put in slightly harder springs and the motor seems to rev up now before the centrifugal clutch catches. More testing before calling it a day...
