Default bike runs wide open during cold starts

Hey guys, im new on here, i have a problem with my 94 kx 250, it seems like after my bike sits for a while (1 week) and i start it, it runs wide open for about 10-20 seconds, so I took the carb apart to see what it looked like, very clean inside, no dirt or any kind of build up was there. After that initial crank the bike runs fine, no ideling problem or anything. This started after I went riding and accidently rode my bike off into some deep water, I took the plug and and there was some water on it, im not for sure how much water was in the head, but after about an hour of kicking it and pulling the plug out and drying it off it finally cranked again, im assuming this would cause a problem, but how, ive also read that an air leak would cause it to run wide open, but like i said, it only does it after it has been sitting for a week, then it runs like a champ, this is my first 2 stroke and any help would be appreciated, is there maintenace i should do to it when not riding like draining the fuel out of the carb during the week or something?

it does sound like an air leak. it depends on the fuel. i have no problem storing mine for weeks on pump gas i get here which is "cornfree". if you get ethanol additives i guess it is worse. so i would dump it each time and drain the carburetor and refill with a little bit of avgas probably. or just run better fuel to start with. there are some things i dont like about avgas, but nothing stores like it. that i have tried anyway.

Hot engines and water don't mix. It sounds like you have an air leak.

Thats what I was afraid of. But it I had an air leak wouldnt it run wide open all the time, or would it just be during cold starts. What is a good way to verify an air leak?

Ok, a leak down test would tell you for sure.

Scared the crap out of me when it happened to my bike! Broke the carb down and cleaned it. That solved the problem.

In case you don't find an air leak which I would not rule out.!

Yep, sounds like your air leak is being introduced after the engine is warm.
