Default 01 CR250R Pro-Smoke.it

Iím running castor 927 @ 32:1 w/93 octane in my 01 CR250 and it will smoke very bad and run rough when it first starts up or if I shut it off for a few minutes then get back on it. After I rev it out once it runs fine from then on. I thought it was leaking fuel past the float needle and seat so I replaced them and checked the float level. Still does it, has anyone else had this problem?

I have used other castor based oils without that problem. Crank seal? Jetting?

I have all stock jets and settings, good reeds, new cylinder piston and rings. The crank was tight when I picked it up so I haven't checked the seals yet. Strange thing is, it will only do this when I kill the engine for a few minutes. It I would run it all day without stoping the engine it will run great all day.

stock jetting is a little on the fat side for most conditions. just curious, do you turn the gas off when you put it up? ride in a hot climate?

Yes, I shut the gas off, I've even tried running it out and it will still smoke and run rough, until I rev it out once. Could it be possible for the black oily stuff that blows out the exhaust to be leaking off the exhaust valve into the cylinder? I guess I need to do a leak down test.

I would look for a bad crank seal, clutch side, but do them both.

I've changed both crank seals and its still running bad. I had put a new plug in and it ran worse, so I decided to check out my ignition system. I ohmed my coil and it is out of spec. Service manual says the resistance between the primary and secondary should be 4-8 ohms, my coil is reading 3k ohms. I ordered a new coil and hope this fixes my problems.

I was just reading this the other day:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

If you look under the Honda cr250, they are known to have the "secondary coil" malfunction.

So, at least it's normal and there might be some good info in there for ya.

Once you do that, don't be at all surprised if you don't find the stock jetting a whole lot rich. Particularly for summer riding.

Brand new motor like out of a crate?? Probably not. Receipts are the only way to tell (kind of) with out tearing it down. Might be able to take the pipe off and peek inside at the piston to see it's condition.

I bought a brand new motor for my 2002 CR250 last summer, so it is possible.
