Default 1997 RM125 resurrection

Hey guys,

It's been ages since I've posted around here..And I've decided it's time to get my '97 RM125 running again. It's been sitting for the past 5-6 years, as I was in the process of rebuilding and ran out of time and money, leaving for college.

It's that time though to get that thing back up and running.

The backstory of what happened:

The original issue was that the exhaust valve broke off at the neck and slid into the cylinder, smacking the piston. The rest of the cylinder and head looked good from what I remember, so I'll need at least 1 exhaust valve, and a top end rebuild kit. I'd like to replace the whole exhaust valve assembly too, since this is the 2nd exhaust valve that broke and I want to ensure it's not due to a bad rod or something.

I'll obviously need to do a thorough carb cleaning too, as well as flushing out the gas tank and stuff because I'm not positive what was left in it.

I'll also need to pick up a spoke set, for I believe both front and rear. Would it be cheaper to buy the spoke sets, and the spoke wrench since I don't have one, or is it fairly common to be able to find some different used wheels?

Besides those few issues I think it's mostly there. There's going to be some random bolts and covers that I'll need to order along the way, as I have moved twice since I put the bike up and am positive some things got misplaced..

I've never tackled something like this before - so really I was posting here to get any advice before I jump headfirst. I'm estimating probably $500 to get it running again - is it worth it? Also, do I need to do anything with the bottom end while I am rebuilding since it's sat for so long?

Sounds like a fun project.

If you think you might have left premix in the tank and carb, a thorough
cleaning will definitely be needed. Probably best to take the carb apart
and soak everything in a can of GUNK over night. Put it back together
with a carb rebuild kit.

As far as spokes, I like Excel spline drives the best. Sets to fit your bike
can be purchased at Motosports for a decent price.

Keep us posted and good luck with it.

FWIW, Suzuki has a dealer-part-system-locator system that lists every part in the system if you can find a dealer willing to look into it for you....I found n.o.s. spoke sets for an 82 PE that way.
