When checking valve clearance on exhaust and intake you should be able to slide a feeler gage between the cam lobe and the bucket when at TDC. Am I correct by saying this? I have a 2002 DRZ 400s and checked the clearance and can not slide a feeler gage all the way through even at .001 on the exhaust or intake.I have a thousand miles on it and never checked them until now. The bike stalls when idling but will run when giving it gas. Question? Is it possible I am doing some thing wrong or are they that tight? Also will I be able to bring them back in to spec?

It sound like you are doing everything correctly and yes I have seen several valves that are that tight. Quote:

My mistake I was checking the valves on the wrong stroke. Once I figured that out the exhaust and intake were only on the low end so I brought them back into spec. But the bike still wants to stall when idling. Maybe some thing is still blocked in the carb. This problem seems to of started when I pressure washed it at the car wash. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the four strokes use 720* of crank rotation per power stroke producing two possible TDC's, a right one and a wrong one when checking valves. Easiest way to find it is (before working on the bike) roll it back in gear until the rear tire won't turn any more. Throw it up on the stand and line up your timing marks (should only be a few degrees off) and your set. Check for blocked or clogged vent hoses. If the carb hasn't been opened up in a while it could probably use a good cleaning with carb cleaner and compressed air. Setting the float level while you're in there should be considered mandatory. Good luck.

Personally, on any 4-stroke, I watch the cam lobes and check the clearance on each valve when the lobe is close to oppisite from the valve actuator. (rocker arm, bucket, whatever)
